Nato’s problems go deeper than US withdrawal
UnHerd ^ | 3/22/25 | Johann Wennstrom

The nascent European project of forming a “coalition of the willing” to support Ukraine could be a precursor to a larger joint undertaking. According to the Financial Times, Europe’s biggest military powers and the Nordic states are discussing a plan to “replace the US in Nato”, with a view to guaranteeing the continent’s security. At the heart of the proposal is massively increased defence spending and arms procurement over the coming five to 10 years.

This overcorrection to Vice President JD Vance’s recent critique of decades of European dependency on US military protection is intended to stop the Trump administration from crashing out of Nato. Instead, European countries are trying to persuade America to consider a gradual withdrawal. “Increased spending is the only play we have,” says one European official privy to the discussions.

Yet the possibility of “Amexit” from Nato is not the only challenge posed to the cohesion of the military alliance. As the emergence of the “coalition of the willing” clearly demonstrates, European countries are themselves split over commitments to Ukraine; Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte increasingly resembles a frustrated chief whip, unsuccessfully trying to control disruptive members. Poland and the Baltics also question, more or less openly, whether the mutual defence clause Article 5 can really be relied on in the context of the alliance as a whole.

The only positive NATO has accomplished since 1991 has been to keep the fratricidal Euroweenies from each other’s throats. Since the Weenies’ Roman masters left we’ve seen nothing but constant European wars until the Soviets and Americans stopped it. The Russians and sensible Americans can’t wait to wash our hands of them.

Germany will have a nuke within ten years. Anyone who doesn’t laugh out loud at the prospect of a French nuclear deterrence on German territory has no appreciation of history.

Oh yeah, what’s going to happen when Erdogan flees Turkey? Who or what will replace him?

Here’s what an organic, non colored revolution looks like for a NATO “democracy”.

Europe has gone over 85 years without a major war. I think that’s a record. Time to bring on the bloodshed. Keep the US out of it!

Turkey is blowing up before our eyes. The Islamists will be in control. How radical and aggressive will they be towards Christian Europe.

Perhaps Poland should provide the Russians with a 4 lane highway into the rest of Europe(Germany). “Just leave us alone”.

The entire reason for the French nuclear program was to have a completely independent nuclear deterrent. They deliberately chose not to put it into the NATO mix, reason being in a Russian war with Germany might decide to stop at the French border and leave them out of it. Now francis reversing that, meaning France is an instant target if war breaks out anywhere on the continent.

I’ve been saying something similar. A Slavic trade confederation of Poland, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Balkan States serving as a non aligned gateway to the natural resources of Russia.

De Gaulle was no fool. He knew any reasonable American president would not start a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union to keep the Warsaw Pact out of Paris. De Gaulle’s force de frappe ensured the French would be responsible for France’s fate.

Europe needs some Adenauers and De Gaulles, not the Lilliputian idiots currently running the continent into the ground.

The Slavic confederation would of course have a non aligned Ukraine as a member.

Erdogan has no friends. He has backstabbed NATO, Russia, Israel, everyone! No one is going to help pull his chestnuts out of the flames this time.

You’re obviously more informed than I on the subject. What’s your take on what comes next if Erdogan is deposed?

CHP (Kemalists) are the opposition to Erdogan’s Islamists.

Everybody is sick of Erdogan destroying the Turk economy and constant collecting of horrible Jihadi’s.

What’s the CHP’s position regarding Israel and Erdogan’s Syrian machinations?

CHP controlled Turkey from WWI to when Erdogan was first elected.

CHP was run by General Kemal, he took Turkey out of the dark ages and turned them into a modern nation. They were harsh, but secular. The Islamists were crushed.

The Mayor of Istanbul has been creeping up on Erdogan for quite a few years. His power center was in Istanbul.

If they unseat Erdogan, the Jihadi’s will be put down.

It would also affect Syria.
