Four Canadians were executed in China on drug-related charges earlier this year, Canadian authorities have confirmed.
All of them were dual citizens and their identities have been withheld, Canada's foreign minister Mélanie Joly said.
A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Canada reportedly urged Ottawa to "stop making irresponsible remarks", as pundits feared a further downturn in relations between the countries after years of strain.
China's foreign ministry said on Thursday that it had acted "in accordance with the law", while the embassy said there was "solid and sufficient" evidence for their crimes.
Beijing had "fully guaranteed the rights and interests of the Canadian nationals concerned", the embassy said, urging Canada to respect "China's judicial sovereignty".
China does not recognize dual citizenship and takes a tough stance on drug crimes. However, it's rare for the death penalty to be carried out on foreigners.

Looks like Justin’s fawning all over the communist party didn’t pay dividends.
ya... while you would offer them sex change operations...
I remember the old drug commercials of the 70s….”when you’re busted for drugs over there, you’re in for the hassle of your life”.
So will we have reciprocal punishments, just like our reciprocal tariffs?
So 8 kidneys and at least 4 livers are on the market?
Those “dual” citizens made one assumption too many.
A couple of thoughts. The dive boat captain who took our tour to the Bahamas said, “Okay, don’t buy drugs. It’s the local scam. Somebody will offer you a fantastic deal and the moment you buy it, you’ll be arrested, and they will suck thousands of dollars out of you and your family, and you’ll spend the next six months in their unairconditioned, poop in a bucket holding cell...If you want drugs tell me and I’ll buy them for you.”
The other thing is, if China wants some political clout, they’ll just arrest someone. Guilt doesn’t matter.
Quite likely, these people probably did the deed and paid the price. Or, maybe not. I wouldn’t go to a third world s#$%^hole I don’t care how cheap it is.
We are currently in China to visit my wife’s family. The police here are polite, but conspicuous. You have to x-ray your backpack, briefcase, or hand bag when boarding the subway. But if you don’t cause any trouble they don’t give you trouble. The Canadians were asking for trouble if they brought drugs into the PRC.
Interestingly, Free Republic is not censored on my phone using China Unicom, but I need a VPN to access FR using wifi with the tab. I find that humorous.
Dual citizens - my guess - just a guess - is they were Chinese by descent- imported here got Canadian citizenship and brought fentanyl in.
The word “Canadian” means nothing any longer
Its probably some Chinese gangster who bought a big house in Vancouver to get a passport and has never even been there.
What is the method of execution there?
I wondered the same thing. The left can’t find it in themselves to tell us. Must have been painful and inhumane.
lab virus, injected
In the Shanghai Daily english print version there is a column for “executions”, not obituaries, but executions.
Every city in China has a sand pit where military virgins get to kill their first human. It’s training.
Honestly, having read through the reason for the executions as printed “westerner lured into appartment and robbed”, I couldn’t disagree.
They were violent crimes against innocent victims, nothing to do with Party offiliation, but I’m not totally naive.
There is one thing I learned during my time in China, protest is incompatible with the State. Don’t do it. You will dissapear. The Tesla thing? Woodchipper?
In China Islam is a mental disorder. How do you not like that view. They don’t allow it while the west is surrendering to it.
Food for thought.
“What is the method of execution there?”
I believe it is a firing squad
I actually find China to be freer than the UK. Here you can pray silently outside without getting arrested.
He gets a cut of the Fentanyl trade into Canada. Those are the dividends that stiffens his little friend.
