'Because of Donald Trump': Portugal rules out buying F-35s from US

Portugal won't buy Lockheed Martin F-35s from the United States though the country's air force gave a go-ahead for that. The country now wants to take into account other situational aspects and President Donald Trump is one of them. Citing Portuguese media Publico, Politico reported that outgoing defence minister Nuno Melo shot down the proposal of buying F-35s from the US because of Donald Trump. “We cannot ignore the geopolitical environment in our choices. The recent position of the United States, in the context of NATO ... must make us think about the best options, because the predictability of our allies is a greater asset to take into account," Melo said.

What does Portugal need fighter jets for anyway? It's not like they'll ever be used.

The point is that after Trump used Vance as his hatchet man to denigrate Zelenski in the Oval Office, and then tag team him, followed by cutting off weapons and intelligence in the middle of an invasion, European and other nations need to question if something similar could happen to them in a crisis. Why should anyone buy billion dollar weapons systems from the U.S. and risk them becoming bricks because they get locked out of the software and upgrades? European nations may well decide to buy withing the E.U. to avoid that possibility. While people here think Trump asserted that the U.S. wasn’t going to pay for a foreign war, the reality is that he is perceived differently in Europe. What he did hurt the export of U.S. weapons systems to Europe. It has a cost.

They do not have money to buy that sort of thing. Citing President Donald Trump is just a convenient excuse for not doing something they could not afford, and did not need, to do anyway.

When you’ve lost Portugal you’ve certainly lost it all. Whatever will we do to survive as a country now? Clearly dark times ahead without Portugal….

“You Russians can’t see them.”

This would be a very valuable thing to verify. Perhaps we could induce a test pilot to fly around eastern Ukraine near the line of contact to find out. If they are indeed undetectable, that would be great. But if not, we could better use the funds on other systems.

I cannot even begin to guess why Portugal needs fighter planes. The truth is that they probably don’t buy a single fighter plane that isn’t heavily subsidized by the manufacture anyway. They realized Trump is not going to be throwing money around the world, and made a big pronounce method they no longer want the planes that we weren’t gonna give them the money to buy. Bottom line, everything we’re reading is dishonest.
