Romania’s Central Electoral Bureau on Sunday blocked Russia-aligned, far-right candidate Călin Georgescu from running in May’s presidential election.
The bureau said it would post the reasons for its decision later, brushing off objections from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump that the firebrand NATO skeptic should be permitted to stand.
The Digi24 news service said the electoral bureau had voted against allowing Georgescu, the frontrunner, to proceed by a margin of 10 to 4. An appeal can run until Wednesday.
Georgescu came out of nowhere to win the first round of the presidential vote last November, partly on the back of a wildly successfully TikTok campaign.
But the Constitutional Court annulled his victory after an alleged Russian operation was seen to influence the result.
The Trump administration, itself aligning with the Kremlin on core foreign policy objectives, has supported the idea of allowing Georgescu to compete.
Trump’s senior adviser Elon Musk reacted immediately to Sunday’s news from Romania with a tweet saying: “This is crazy.”
Georgescu also tried to play up what he claimed were the international implications of the bureau’s decision: “If democracy in Romania falls, the entire democratic world will fall!” he wrote on Facebook. “This is just the beginning. It’s that simple! Europe is now a dictatorship, Romania is under tyranny!”
Europe is largely Satanic. An enemy of humanity & God.
Only GloboHomo Soros types who want humanity eradicated may be elected president.
The US has enormous influence/leverage over Romania and can compel them to change their mind.
Trump can make this happen.
All he has to do is state Romania is anti democratic and therefore the US will not honor its Article 5 agreement concerning Romania until such time as it has free and fair elections.
And they are very close to Ukraine.
This is called “saving democracy” by forbidding it.
DJT understands this type of warfare better then anyone.
I hope he gets involved.
You ban him from running = immediate expulsion of your ambassador and immediate cessation of any military cooperation between usa/romania
Bingo.
Putin wants their neighbor, Moldova, which used to be a part of the Soviet Union.
Well that may be an issue considering we have a US Army Brigade deployed in Romania as well as a permanent Aegis Ashore battery there.
“Russia-aligned, far-right”, blah blah blah. Politico, the German rag, editorializing again.
The weapons we have paused sending to Ukraine should be airdropped to the Romanian people. They need to give the tyrants running Romania a well-deserved attitude adjustment.
Mao was correct: “Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.”
You can achieve more with a kind word AND a machine gun than with just a kind word.
They never give up. It’s always “Russia Russia Russia”
If we have U.S. military personnel and weapons in Romania, our American military are backing a Romanian dictatorship that won’t let their most popular presidential candidate even run for office.
America is, once again, on the wrong side of a fight in a foreign country.
Europe can’t yell democracy at the US.
“Well that may be an issue considering we have a US Army Brigade deployed in Romania as well as a permanent Aegis Ashore battery there.”
They should be immediately withdrawn, this Romanian dispute notwithstanding.
The American people, and therefore the USA, has no real interests in that part of the world, and no good business being there.
“Putin wants their neighbor, Moldova, which used to be a part of the Soviet Union.”
The American people have no interests in Moldova...nor its neighbor Romania.
Romania has the largest oil and gas reserves in Europe, along with Norway, the UK, and the Netherlands.
“The Trump administration, itself aligning with the Kremlin on core foreign policy objective...”
Happily, no one here in the U.S. would try to strike a popular candidate off the ballot...

I did three interviews with a company and was subsequently offered a job at Deveselu Base in 2017.
I ended up not taking it since I didn’t really want to go back overseas, but I recommended a former colleague of mine who ended up going. He did his year there and told me I made a good decision when I turned down the offer. 😄
