Hantavirus is a rare but highly fatal virus, federal health officials say.
Authorities said Friday that actor Gene Hackman died of Alzheimer’s and heart failure a week after his wife died of hantavirus, a rare viral infection.
Authorities initially ruled out foul play after the bodies were discovered Feb. 26 in the couple’s Santa Fe home, while a bottle of pills was discovered next to the body of his wife, Betsy Arakawa. Immediate tests for carbon monoxide poisoning also tested negative.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza and other officials announced the development in a news conference in New Mexico, where the couple lived and were found dead last month.

The authorities say that he died from heart disease... I guess that they are pussy footing around the probable actual cause. He probably didn’t have the mental faculties to take care of himself. It takes about a week for people to die from not drinking any fluids.
Rats!
“”””It takes about a week for people to die from not drinking any fluids.””””
He wasn’t dehydrated, according to the autopsy.
“… they didn’t have anyone checking up on them on a regular basis.”
He was in his 90’s and she was his caregiver in her 60’s and none of his kids called in 9ish days to check on them?
But I bet his kids will be right there with hands out for the inheritance.
Did the two dogs that were loose eat on them?
I heard “Hantavirus” on the TV
First and immediate thought (Within 2 seconds): New Mexico
THEN I found out it was about Gene Hackman
What is the point of you posting that over and over all day?
no one is answering
He divorced the mother of his three kids and married wife #2 who, at the time of the marriage, was about the age of his kids. So there had to be rancor among the kids that dad treated their mom like that. There were reports that the kids were previously estranged from him, but some reconciliation had occurred. So I’m not surprised the kids were not checking in regularly.
How weird that she died of hantavirus. You get that from areas infested with mice and inhaling dust from mouse droppings. The photos of their Santa Fe home show a gorgeous house, but maybe they did not have a regular housekeeper to keep it clean. Could be those are older photos when it was well maintained, too.
You’ve been reading all the articles on all the threads that you are spamming with that same post over and over, you already know the answer.
That is interesting if accurate... Since he had a history of heart disease along with Alzheimer's the electrolyte imbalance from probably a completely inappropriate diet for a week probably caused his heart to stop. Sounds like a job for Monk.
no
Or was it because he was an enemy of the state?
Just a shame no one was checking on them...not right...Very sad.
It is pretty common for that to happen when people die and the dogs are locked in the house with them. I went on a call where that happened a long time ago. If there had been news coverage on that call... Neither we nor the dispatchers passed that info on to the media.
The dogs were free to come and go as they pleased.
Yes, I think that I read that the front door was open. But obviously no one was feeding them and the smallest one likely died from lack of food and water.
After our last dachshund died... my wife and I took in a stray cat who had been living outside for an extended period of time. For some reasons cats seem to be more able to live without people looking after them.
Thinking about... it the little dog was supposed to have been very attached to Hackman’s wife. She was found with pills spilled around her. The dog may have eaten enough pills to kill it.
My wife's sister is a walking medicine cabinet and spills pills everywhere. We were always concerned that she would inadvertently kill one of our dogs.
