President Donald Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ missile defense project will require a whole-of-government effort on par with the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb, according to a Space Force general.
"This is on the order of magnitude of Manhattan Project, and it’s going to take concerted effort from the very top of our government. It's going to take a national will to bring all this together," Gen. Michael Guetlein, vice chief of space operations of the U.S. Space Force, told a gathering of defense industry experts on Wednesday.

Israel was able to do it. But Israel is only the size of NJ.
The USA is nearly 500 times the size of Israel !
Think of the scale and the Geography we have to cover. From Hawaii to Alaska to the East Coast.
I’d rather spend money on this than:
CANCELLED: $600,000 grant to study “menstrual cycles in transgender men”

Does “Whole of Government” include USAID?
$600,000 to simply write “Men do not menstruate”
I’m not worried about ballistic missiles raining down on the country. I’m worried about a tramp steamer carrying a dirty bomb sliding into one of our ports.
Perhaps that’s where we should be focusing our defensive efforts.
But then again, I’m not a Space Force general, or a general of any kind. So maybe I’m missing something here.

I would rather spend money on this than money defending Europe.
It's like covering Russia with the Iron Dome.
Not feasible. Maybe in a couple of decades.
Israel also didn’t have to deal with fast movers that might get thrown at the US in quantity.
If you look at potential damage, 1000 Russian ICBM’s are a way bigger threat than one tramp steamer. The steamer can wreck a city. The 1000 ICBMS can destroy absolutely everything.
“From Hawaii to Alaska”
Forget Hawaii, it’s a lost cause. Tell Alaska we’ll consider including them when they get rid of Murkowski.
Building a missile shield is far more of an investment in our national security than the 200 billion we squandered in a senseless war.
About the only worthwhile thing that came for the Ukraine war are war porn go-cam videos from every soldier that straps a camwra to the head and chest.
How we could afford Golden Dome alongside LGM-35A Sentinel (replacement for the current Minuteman III ICBM), Columbia-Class SSBN, NGAD, new Ford-class aircraft carriers, F-35 upgrades, B-21 Raider and all the rest?
Quantity of incoming is a major problem, also the current cost of such a defense. This is why the THAAD system is oriented to defend an area us could represent a military base, or a single city.
A system of satellites could defend a large area. It would need to be immense in number to cover the planet and also defend a large number of incoming missiles.
We also need to address other delivery vehicles and drones.
A very big deal.
No idea. Take it up with Secty Hegseth.
> 1000 Russian ICBM’s are a way bigger threat than one tramp steamer. <
Agreed. But as I see it, the chances are greater that we’ll be attacked by that tramp steamer than by Russia.
Russia knows that if they send ICBM’s at us, they’ll get the same in return. But where did that tramp steamer come from? North Korea? Iran? China? Some crazy group backed by no country?
There’s really no “mutual assured destruction” deterrent in such cases.
The fission products “signature” should be able to indicate origin, pretty well.
The Boulder Dam was built in a short time.
Sounds like the same pessimistic attitude after Reagan proposed SDI.
You can bet the defense industry complex is licking its lips at the thought of 100 billion in new defense expenditures...
