Canada should seek closer ties with Britain because its nuclear weapons can help protect the country against Donald Trump, a Liberal party leader running to replace Justin Trudeau has said.
Chrystia Freeland, the former deputy prime minister under Mr Trudeau, said that US president is "clearly threatening our sovereignty" with his campaign to absorb Canada as the 5lst state of America.
Freeland said she would build closer security partnerships with European Nato allies and "I would be sure that France and Britain were there, who possess nuclear weapons".
"I would be working urgently with those partners to build a closer security relationship... in a time when the United States can be a threat," said the ex-foreign minister and finance minister at the final Liberal leadership debate last week.
The Liberal party has overtaken the Conservatives in the polls for the first time since 2021, surging on a backlash to Mr Trump and his mockery of Mr Trudeau as merely "Governor" of Canada.
Ms Freeland is running second in the race to Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England. She draws 31 per cent of voters against Mr Carney's 43 per cent, a poll for Mainstreet Research found last week. Results are due on March 9.

Without the U.S. being geographically located next to Canada, Canada would be just like another 3rd world or banana republic.
Further, when it comes to defense, Canada has benefited from the military defense which America provides. Without the U.S., Canada could have been taken over many decades ago, by Russia or China. It’s bad enough Canada has been taken over by the socialists/communist within the country, but, it could have been much worse without the U.S.
Perhaps we need a border wall in the north, like Trump wants to finish building at our southern border.
Just for fun, Trump should order some large-scale military exercises along the Canadian border.

I lived my whole life in the UP of Michigan. Got along fine with the Canadians in the western region up to Ottawa. Its from about there east to the Atlantic where the frogs (Canucks) live is the problem. Those and the Scots in the maritime provinces.
The Parisian French cant even stand the Canadian French. Arrogant.

Operationally the nukes are mounted 5 each (MIRV’d) on 8 each Trident II D5’s (developed/built by Lockheed Martin) and carried in one of four aging Vanguard SSBN’s....only one of which is deployed at a time.
The last two test launches since 2016 failed.....old and rickety like all other things British.
Worse.....we keep their non-deployed missiles in Kings Bay Georgia....where they come to “load up/swap out.
It is sad how derelict they have become across all their services.
France is the only “old power” that has kept any semblance of credible nuke or conventional deterrence.
Canada only exists because of being a de facto protectorate of the United States. As far as being a 51st state, I think they would make at least 10 states and possibly 12. It would be nice to have the 2nd amendment there.
This isn’t entirely surprising if one has argued with many Canadian leftists like I have. They are common on Quora and were on Craigslist before I was permanently banned.
They hate conservatism, especially Trump style with a hatred that’s hard to explain. I would say many would want to see us nuked.
