Canada should seek closer ties with Britain because its nuclear weapons can help protect the country against Donald Trump, a Liberal party leader running to replace Justin Trudeau has said.
Chrystia Freeland, the former deputy prime minister under Mr Trudeau, said that US president is "clearly threatening our sovereignty" with his campaign to absorb Canada as the 5lst state of America.
Freeland said she would build closer security partnerships with European Nato allies and "I would be sure that France and Britain were there, who possess nuclear weapons".
"I would be working urgently with those partners to build a closer security relationship... in a time when the United States can be a threat," said the ex-foreign minister and finance minister at the final Liberal leadership debate last week.
The Liberal party has overtaken the Conservatives in the polls for the first time since 2021, surging on a backlash to Mr Trump and his mockery of Mr Trudeau as merely "Governor" of Canada.
Ms Freeland is running second in the race to Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England. She draws 31 per cent of voters against Mr Carney's 43 per cent, a poll for Mainstreet Research found last week. Results are due on March 9.

If you take a look at 338canada.com, you will see one poll (1000 people surveyed) with the Liberals at a two point lead. Likely if you take out the Toronto area polled, the Tories are still that good bit ahead and other polls conducted at about the same time still show a moderate to strong Conservative lead.
Also, if the Liberal brand really recovered because of Trump (not to discount that idea completely), Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie would have won her seat and made further gains against Doug Ford.

As far as I know (and I’m open to correction if wrong) — UK builds its own nuclear weapons BUT it buys its delivery systems from the U.S.
For decades, Canada made much ado about being free of American nukes protecting it from Russia and China, preferring the USA be the target of a first strike. Best of both worlds — protected and not a target.
And the second it’s not raping American taxpayers, it wants nukes.
