NATO split deepens as Trump accuses UK-led 'Coalition of the Willing' of weakness for relying on American backstop for peace after Zelensky claimed war end was 'very far away'

The NATO split is deepening as Donald Trump accuses the UK-led 'coalition of the willing' of being weak for relying on an American backstop for peace.

As bombs and drones rained down on Ukraine yesterday, Emmanuel Macron proposed a 30-day end to the fighting – but without any security guarantees for Kyiv.

Britain and other allies gave the plan the cold shoulder, as the UK supports the Ukrainian position which is that any end to the war must be secured by an agreement which Russia will be too scared to break.

European leaders were hoping a common policy on Ukraine would emerge following Sunday's landmark security summit at Lancaster House in London. Reports of the French diplomatic effort emerged yesterday.

When the plan was put to leaders at Sunday's meeting, none volunteered their support. But out of respect for French president Mr Macron, nobody spoke against it either. But concerns remain among allies over the number of troops countries can provide as part of a post-settlement stabilisation force.

Trump said following the summit: 'It is what I was saying, this guy doesn't want there to be peace as long as he has America's backing and, Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelensky, stated flatly that they cannot do the job without the U.S.'

He added in what appeared to be an attack on what he appeared to perceive as a weakness of European leaders: 'Probably not a great statement to have been made in terms of a show of strength against Russia. What are they thinking?'

Trump also launched a new attack on Zelensky on Monday after his Ukrainian counterpart said peace with Russia 'is still very, very far away.'

The ONLY adult in the room states the OBVIOUS, just common sense really.

Trump said following the summit: 'It is what I was saying, this guy doesn't want there to be peace as long as he has America's backing and, Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelensky, stated flatly that they cannot do the job without the U.S.'

Outstanding news. Hopefully, those NATO countries will cancel their F-35 orders ASAP.

Uh, Sir Keir, maybe giving the guy in the gym suit a big Bro-hug and saying you’ll write checks your ass can’t cover might not have been a smart play. Just say’n.

It’s time to get the H out of NATO. Bring our troops and our equipment home.

Build up our military so it can do anything we need it to anywhere in the world.

True.

Let’s dump them both and buy everyone in the U.S. pizza and beer with the interest on what it would save us.
