More than half of books banned last year featured LGBTQ characters or people of color, report finds

More than half of books banned during the last school year featured or were about people of color or members of the LGBTQ community, according to a report released Thursday.

PEN America, a nonprofit group that advocates for free expression in literature, released data in the fall that found more than 10,000 instances of schools or their districts removing books from school, classrooms or curriculums last year, affecting 4,218 titles. The analysis released Thursday found that those bans disproportionately affect books about certain identities, including people of color, and also more often apply to certain genres, such as history.

The analysis found that 36% of the more than 4,000 banned titles featured characters or people of color and 25% included LGBTQ characters or people. Of the titles featuring LGBTQ people, 28% featured a transgender and/or genderqueer character. One in 10 of the banned titles featured characters or people with a physical and/or learning or developmental disability, the analysis found.

“This targeted censorship amounts to a harmful assault on historically marginalized and underrepresented populations — a dangerous effort to erase their stories, achievements, and history from schools,” Sabrina Baêta, senior manager for PEN America.

Educational institutions that receive federal funding have become ground zero for the conservative-led effort in recent years to limit students’ access to information about race and racism as well as the LGBTQ community. Proponents of the restrictions argue that such information can make students uncomfortable and that students shouldn’t have access to sexually explicit material.

Critics of the bans argue that restricting access to information harms all students’ abilities to learn, can promote further discrimination and doesn’t allow students of color and LGBTQ students to see their lives reflected in books.

It looks that way. That just shows how ignorant and naive the left is.

This isn’t “censorship.”
People are free to buy every one of those books for their children if they want to.

First of all, none of these books were “banned” - blatant lie in the headline and article.

What occurred was it was deemed inappropriate for schools to expose children to sexualized content - something any decent person would support. Schools and libraries should not house or distribute such materials to expose children to or have taxpayers paying to house and distribute such materials. Has nothing to do with “banning” them. Otherwise - do the schools have Playboy and Hustler magazine there? Why not? Does that mean they are “banned”? Of course not. They just aren’t housed there. As for the books with “people of color” - what were they about? Seriously doubt any of them were restricted merely because a character in the book happens to be black.

Here is Senator John Kennedy reading aloud some of the materials these Leftist groups and the Democrats want our children to be exposed to and want taxpayers to house and distribute in our schools and libraries: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBhy_vlgKS4

BBC video content created in the last few years is chockablock with period-inappropriate blacks and a statistically inappropriate number of homosexual and/or mixed race couples.

Not just on the Beeb, I just don’t watch it. Like I started the new HBO series Dune:Prophecy and switched it off before the opening scene was over because it was forecasting shamelessly WOKE content to come.

Sounds like there’s a lot of LGBTQ and people of color in inappropriate books being pushed on children.

There are no books being banned. Not having a book in the library is not banning book. School libraries are not obligated to have every published book available.

They can’t breed; they have to recruit. So they sneak their books into schools.

Banned book nonsense again? Not age appropriate is a better term. You would not give a school kid a book printed in 1968 and sold out of the back room of a book store now would you, or even one sold out of the front room of an Adult book store in the 1970s.

I bet more schools have banned “Conservative” books like “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie”.

They know that people find perverted sex practices disgusting, so they always try to make it look like a "civil rights" issue, by linking it to the struggle of black people.

Quite right!

I recently came across a conservative commentator who rightly pointed out that abortion advocates had sneakily succeeded in framing "abortion" chiefly as a "privacy" issue.

"So you break into a room where people are murdering babies, and they cry 'Whatever happened to knocking, huh?!'"

Regards,

Liars.

Who’s “report”.

As stupid as “studies find”...what studies? Who did them? Who paid for them? What methodology?

Try putting a Bible in the school and watch the left ban it.
