Fabric and craft retailer Joann to go out of business and close all of its stores

CHICAGO -- Fabric and crafts retailer Joann Inc., which has been a destination for generations of quilters, knitters and lovers of crafts projects for more than 80 years, is going out of business and shuttering all its stores.

The announcement comes after the Hudson, Ohio-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January, the second time in a year. It cited sluggish consumer demand and inventory shortages. At the time it vowed it would keep all of its stores open.

But earlier this month, Joann said it planned to close 500 stores - or more than half of its nationwide footprint. The company said on Sunday that after a recent auction, financial services company GA Group, together with Joann's term lenders, were selected as the winning bidder to "acquire substantially all of Joann's assets" and would begin winding down the company's operations and conduct going-out-of-business sales at all store locations.

The company said in a question-and-answer section on its website devoted to its restructuring that the stores, Joann.com and the mobile app will remain open and operate as it conducts going-out-of- business sales.

That’s terrible. I have on in my neighborhood and buy a few things there every year. Extremely nice store and the people who work there are nice and very smart about their inventory,

It is sad to see all of these stores go out of business. Shopping online is just not the same.

What a shame!
My daughter loved her summer job at one of their stores, and uses them now as an older (post college) person for her craft/sewing needs!
How disappointed to see!

ONE checkout during peak buying seasons.

They’ve been striving for extinction for decades.

And they wonder why Amazon has taken over retailing!

My wife buys a lot of stuff from them. And you can trust me when I say that you can’t really properly buy some of this stuff online. You have to see it and touch it.

She’s going to be very disappointed. I don’t know there’s any kind of alternative. And before anyone says Walmart has a craft department with material, it’s one step above a joke, even I can see that.

This is the future.

I recently bought a Sailrite Ultra Feed Sewing Machine to learn how to sew to do the upholstery on my boat. Bought a lot of stuff from here to learn... bummer its closing. I better make a couple trips and stock up on some material until my stitches are straight enough to start the vinyl for the upholstery...

(Gotta give credit where credit is due!! I have a whole new respect for those old ladies on their machines witnessed my whole life!! Creating a very straight stitch is not an easy task!! js....)

I used to get my rare needs met at Hancock Fabric, until they went belly up. I’ve had to go to JoAnne a couple of times since then and it was always unpleasantly crowded.

I guess I better go stock up on fabric to reupholster a few chairs that are likely to need it at some point.

My wife made a run to Joann after dinner this evening. They aren't doing big sales yet. She did find some knitting needles. My wife buys her good yarn from European suppliers and a few in the US. The local retailers don't stock high end yard.

Radio Shack, murdered by management more than anything else

I worked at Radio Shack in grad school. Between my ham license and 2nd class Radiotelephone license, I had a repeat customer base of 400 regular customers plus all that the Mission Valley mall could attract. It covered my gas, food and books. I upgraded to First Class Radiotelephone and Ship's RADAR endorsement. That opened the door to work at Marine Electric Company as a field service engineer. Tripled my hourly income. Good "hand's on" marine electronics work. A mix of field (boat and business office) and bench tech repair work. In later years, Radio Shack was still my "go to" store for small parts for field repairs.

We still have a Radio Shack in Pocatello. It is a franchise with a mix of Radio Shack corporate supplied product lines and other stuff the proprietor likes.
