Transportation secretary Sean Duffy sounds alarm on antiquated FAA system that still uses 'floppy discs'

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has pushed for a massive upgrade of the Federal Aviation Administration, claiming their computer system still uses 'floppy discs.'

As the nation is reeling from recent plane crashes, Duffy sounded the alarm on the antiquated FAA claiming there are systems in the network 'that are run on floppy discs.'

'The systems that we use are so old. I need the Congress to move faster with us. We can't wait four years, six years, 10 years. We have to do it right now,' Duffy told CBS News.

Donald Trump's Administration has set its sights on replacing the nation's entire air traffic control system following a spate of plane crashes.

Passengers aboard a regional American Airlines flight were warned to 'brace for impact', after the jet reported an emergency onboard on Thursday.

The jet, which was operating as their regional carrier American Eagle, had been travelling from Jacksonville, Florida, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The jet managed to touch down just before 10am, with one passenger taking to X saying: 'Brake issues so we were braced for emergency brakes potentially worse. Spirits are high now!

'Shout out Captain and crew for for having everyone prepped though, turned out to feel like a smooth landing.'

The atc system has been identified over and over as decrepit. Vacuum tube operating systems. Programs in COBOL. Intercontinental Nav beacons set up in the 60’s On and on.

Yet here we are.

Is the mainframe back in DC? Are they still using CRT monitors? What has the FAA been doing with the money they’re given?

Floppy disks at the FAA? That’s more advanced than some of the old Navy ships doing their data backups on reels of tape.

The reason that the ATC systems have NOT been upgraded, is that the MONEY needed is being stolen and spent on not needed stuff and kickbacks to the pols. Since the 60’s.

My MS Word still uses the floppy disk as its save icon.

That’s modern compared to some FAA systems - when they talk floppy discs they mean real , old time 5 1/4 flexible, literally floppy discs.

They actually have a special company that specializes in making them for legacy government systems who are the only people in the world who still use them

Don't laugh, someone is making a lot of jack selling floppy discs to the gubmint.

DOGE will find out that floppy discs is a billion dollar line item.

I gotta feeling some agency is recording security on VHS.

They killed my Northstar Loran C, all my comm radios to three places after the decimal point, and my NAV 11 and NAV 12 VOR's. All worked flawlessly. Just a $38,000 upgrade to stay IFR certified and airworthy.

I was still doing my pre-flight planning, weather, etc....on my old IBM XT 3.2 DOS in 2005.

My son writes code to keep all the satellites communicating, launched in the 70's, all the way up to today. There are reasons for the old stuff.

Maybe Stuxnet can’t be placed on a floppy disc. So there.

Obviously, this has been a high priority for some time. Just after the illegals get their luxury hotel accommodations.

One good thing about that system is that it can’t be hacked, right?

“... Programs in COBOL ...”

If that is meant to be a knock on a mature programming language I assume that you are unfamiliar with the evolutionary status of COBOL today. Several dialects now support DBMS access and other computing needs of the current day. Some even support object oriented constructs (gasp!). It is certainly a lot easier to learn than some of the weird languages coming out of academia these days.

“Vacuum tube operating systems. Programs in COBOL. Intercontinental Nav beacons set up in the 60’s On and on.”
Those systems work, I can write COBOL it works quite well for it’s purpose and I can troubleshoot Vacuum tube systems!
The failure is purely political. Quit hiring people on the basis of sex, race, or political leanings!
Hire on the basis of merit alone!
If you end up with all white men, so be it.
We end up paying Y’alls welfare checks anyway.
Let me ask you this when you get on an airplane do you want the most qualified persons as crew or the most Diverse?
