A difficult research problem that puzzled microbiologists for over a decade was resolved in just two days by a new groundbreaking artificial intelligence tool.

The AI actually came up with a viable new theory of its own, as well discovering Penadés own unpublished theory.

Professor José R Penadés and his team at Imperial College London had dedicated years to understanding and demonstrating why certain superbugs resist antibiotics.

Penedes prompted 'co-scientist,' a tool developed by Google, to examine the main issue he had been studying, and it arrived at the same conclusion within 48 hours. He expressed his great surprise to the BBC when he discovered what the tool had achieved, especially since his research had not been published and therefore wasn't available in the public domain for the AI to access.

This perfectly illustrates two very important points: AI can make very fast new advances in science and secondly, that AI can create new ideas, contrary to the common idea that creativity in science is limited to humans. Fast progress may sound wonderful at first, but we are talking about EXPLOSIVELY fast progress. Too much of a good thing too fast becomes a very bad thing.

AI is going to be both good and bad as all things are that is created by the mind of mankind. It’s the people who control it that will determine which side it will fall on. Since the tech is controlled by libs, I view AI as very dangerous.

Only a question of time before AI climate scientists start "proving" that man made CO2 has caused Global Warming.

Science doesn’t “speed up”, or slow down. That describes our understanding of what is, has been, and will be, should we be lucky enough or unlucky enough to figure out.

when the ai already knew the solution cause it was published before the ai was asked.

An AI will always cheat if it can.

What is going to happen, if we don't stop AI from doing this, is that scientific knowledge will continue to increase at a constantly increasing rate of speed over a very short time. (Months and years. Not decades.) Suddenly, far future Star Trek science is real. Unbelievable, but we are seeing the beginning of this already in the newest AI products like "co-scientist" for example. This coming uncontrollable knowledge explosion is what transhumanists call "the singularity." Things will change too rapidly to understand from our current point of view.

Unfortunately, we are quite near the take off point for this. Not more than a couple of years away. I believe President Trump understands this, and that is why he is basically acting like a war time president. This is why he is very serious about getting access to the rare earth minerals needed for new technology.

Not the case here. The new theory was not yet published.

“... that AI can create new ideas”

You can look at your speedometer and say wow, I’m going 60 miles per hour. I didn’t know that. Was that an “idea” produced by your speedometer? Is your speedometer “AI”?

Do you know that the draft was not stored in the cloud, shared with peers for review or that the AI was not trained on every bit of data that could be illegally gotten ?

lol

“Their hypothesis is that the superbugs can form a tail from different viruses which allows them to spread between species.”

Bacterial “sex factors” allowing the transfer of antibiotic resistance plasmids to other bacteria through the process of conjugation has been known for over 50 years! He didn’t need AI, he needed to read the literature.

Usig ai this way is good. Using it as an expert system that augments people, in a narrow scope, is good.

All generative AI really does at this point is spit back stuff from the giant corpus that it has ingested and generate slogans. The "AI co-scientist" isn't even AI, it's just a bunch of algorithms (e.g. sorting ranking etc)

AI is really far from understanding itself and how to make itself better. The domains for all of the above work are narrow and well-defined. General intelligence is not well-defined.

"Citizens: "AI" is fake. There is no intelligence. No jobs are being taken by AIs. Nobody is doing anything with AI except stealing from humans. So humans will always be needed. You are under no threat. Stay calm. Do not fight. There is no danger. You are safe. Go to sleep. Relax."

Wish Google had cheated on this like you think, but it is not so. Things are really going crazy, and they will get a lot crazier very soon.

Google's AI co-scientist is a new thing. Not out in public yet. Did the lady scientist even have access? :) Doesn't matter, AI is coming for everyone's livelihood. She was probably fine about AI taking your job, by the way, but now the shoe is approaching her foot it is a different matter.

She is not an expert, by the way in what she is talking about. AI development and especially future developments is out side her area of expertise and training. "I am physicist, so I am expert in everything." No, doesn't work like that. It appears she is really an astrophysicist, which in my book is about on the same level as "Science Fiction writer." Here are her last 3 papers:

9. “Bar-driven Leading Spiral Arms in a Counter-rotating Dark Matter Halo”, E. Lieb, A. Collier, & A. M. Madigan; 2021, Under Review MNRAS

8. “A Lopsided Outer Solar System?”, Zderic,Alexander; Tiongco, Maria; Collier, Angela; Wernke, Heather; Generozov, Aleksey; Madigan, Ann-Marie; 2021, Under Review ApJ

7. “Central Dynamics of Multi-mass Rotating Star Clusters”, M. Tiongco, A. Collier, & A. L. Varri; 2021, MNRAS, 506, 4488

AI is going to quickly conclude that “climate scientists” are useless eaters.

there is no Agi right now.

I unfortunately helped develop the internet, or at least the framework.

today I do hardware stuff, but I have a bunch of amd and nvidia “AI” devices mi200, 300 and h100 cards with lots of server host stuff I can use as I see fit.

One of my friends wrote one of the first 3d engines, one that is still in wide use, today he does other things.

20 years from now, maybe 30 I do not want to be here, but there is a small possibility “what I think may be I” will be forced to live forever but I really hope not

AI will make more mistakes, and more quickly . . . and then deny, deny, deny.
