A major US law firm, Morgan & Morgan, is facing scrutiny after two of its lawyers admitted to using artificial intelligence (AI) that generated fictitious case law in a lawsuit against Walmart.
The incident in a Wyoming federal court highlights the potential pitfalls of relying on AI in legal proceedings and has prompted the firm to issue an urgent warning to its lawyers about the use of AI.

As a retired lawyer this really gets to me. Any lawyer, to be worth his or her salt, has to read and check the cases he or she enters in a brief or other legal memorandum. Not doing so is pure malpractice. Equally important, this shows that AI is only as good as its programming, just like GPS. I had an early GPS in one of my cars and it would sometimes lead me to the strangest places. Those nitwit lawyers never seemed to realize GPS is science, not witchcraft, and that AI is the same.

Large firms always include lengthy string cites in their briefs. Like Charles Dickens, they are in some sense being paid by the word. However, if you take the time to read them, probably less than one out of five, on average, is on point, and some have nothing whatever to do with the issues at hand.
How many times does this have to happen before people will stop believing Large Language Models are some sort of short cut with no downsides?

Maybe someone should go and look at the cites that Morgan used on the nicotine suits against big cigarette manufacturers. Love to see that ambulance chasing dem lose out. He was a big supporter of the non medical marijuana amendment that lost in fl. When announced, the defeat made me cheer.

As a man. Let that sink in. Part of it is that many attorneys expect just their job name to be enough to win battles without having to do their homework. For me it was personal enough to spend the time needed. But if I'm honest, the main reason I won is because I believe in the Lord Almighty. With Him all things are possible.
