WASHINGTON, Feb 18 (Reuters) - When Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago, then-U.S. President Joe Biden took a firm stand in solidarity with Kyiv, forged a bulwark of European allies and set veteran advisers to the task of isolating Moscow economically and diplomatically.
Washington's approach changed dramatically with Tuesday's initial meeting between U.S. and Russian negotiators.
The officials met just a month after Donald Trump returned to the White House, with Ukraine and NATO partners sidelined by a relatively inexperienced team of Trump aides and Putin granted concessions even before the talks got under way.
Trump's rush to impose an end to Russia's war in Ukraine has stoked fears of a peace deal with Putin that could undermine Kyiv and Europe's security and alter the geopolitical landscape.
"The really worrying fact is that Trump has taken Russia from pariah to prize partner in the time span of just a few days. That comes at a price," said Brett Bruen, a former foreign policy adviser in the Obama administration.
Even before the talks, European politicians accused Trump of handing free concessions to Moscow last week by ruling out NATO membership for Ukraine and saying it was an illusion for Kyiv to believe it could win back the 20% of its territory now under Russian control. Some critics condemned Trump for what they said amounted to appeasement.

So Trump pursuing peace with a nuclear armed Russia is somehow riskier than continuing to fight to expand NATO’s borders right up to Russia by annexing a former Russian territory that was the route of all European invasions into Russia?
Somehow, I doubt it.
Do the war clowns listen to themselves?
Peace is an unknown concept to war mongers. They may have to learn how to be productive citizens, instead of destructive parasites.
Do the war clowns listen to themselves?
So far, this is the question of the week...congrats.
Note the language. “US Russia” policy is something that exists all on it’s own and a president must obey it.
Sorta like the way Vindman testified that Trump did not follow the instructions of “the interagency group” in the phone call.
Reuters - trash and they millions from USAID.
Reuters lol, a USAID dependent of the deep state globalist warmonger narrative.
Who’s going to subsidize their propaganda machine in the future,
Libs think too much free speech caused the holocaust and now they fear a peace deal. Sun Ting Wong.
Biden was bought and paid for by Zelenski.
“then-U.S. President Joe Biden took a firm stand in solidarity with Kyiv”. Not before Joey said this, I guess it took a little while for the money to start coming in:
“I think what you’re going to see is that Russia will be held accountable if it invades. And it depends on what it does. It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion and then we end up having a fight about what to do and not do.”
Should have stopped reading right after this fallacy. Biden's careless words condoned the invasion.
Russia couldn’t take down Ukraine in three years of war. Now they are a threat to the rest of Europe? They had to import Nork military to help.
You don’t score without taking chances.
Putin doesn’t care a thing about taking all of Ukraine and has no interest in taking any of Europe. He just wants everybody else worn out and broke militarily before Russia cracks economically. So far, he’s scraping by.
Yes, Biden defaulted on bond payments to another country, Russia. Reuters is part of the deep state cabal.
Come on Matty. Put on your big boy pants. Trump has the controls.
And how is that working out for... anybody?
“Do the war clowns listen to themselves?”
No. That’s why the article says this:
“U.S. President Joe Biden took a firm stand“
Uh, sure he did. It’s not as if he had been napping on the beach three weeks each month.
