A fiery pileup turned a quiet Friday morning into a nightmare as an inferno raged inside an Interstate 80 tunnel in southwestern Wyoming claiming at least two lives, and leaving five others seriously injured, forcing a total shutdown of the highway.
Anyone trapped in the tunnel would have been forced to escape on foot through the smoke and darkness.
Rescuers desperately tried to reach victims, but the tunnel’s structure - now compromised by falling concrete and searing heat - turned into a death trap.

Probably not smart to have DEIs trying to maintain the tunnel.

Reminds me of an incident I just read about the other day.
Balvano train disaster (1944)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balvano_train_disaster
The Balvano train disaster was the deadliest railway accident in Italian history and one of the worst railway disasters ever. It occurred on the night between 2–3 March 1944 in Balvano, Basilicata. 517 people in a steam-hauled, coal-burning freight train (mostly stowaways) died of carbon monoxide poisoning during a protracted stall in a tunnel.

My thoughts as well but this did happen in a long tunnel between Italy and Germany (IIRC) a few years ago!
The loss of life was terrible!

Wow. It got lost as just one more event with large loss of life that was the norm in WWII. I had never heard of it.

The Allies suppressed news of the incident, fearing impact on morale.

It appears a tractor trailer loaded with transformers was involved in the tunnel crash, and the transformers were exploding, according to Cowboy State Daily.I wonder if the insulating oil in them is now more flammable and “eco friendly”.

If our press corps could follow a non-Trump story, we wouldn't have to rely on the UK for our news.

Yes, and I've noticed that Daily Mail coverage is extensive. They bring forth paragraph, after
paragraph, photos upon photos, and interviews with principals. Nothing in the USA comes as
close to that kind of depth and breadth. You are lucky to get a stock image and two paragraphs from American newspapers.

A similar thing happened in the Caldecott tunnel on Hwy 24 in the East Bay Area back in the 80s.
That same tunnel was used to film some of the scenes for the movie “THX 1138.”

Exactly - I also read the cover sheets to the India Times and a Japanese paper and one from Australia.
