Has current technology surface fleets ineffective, or excessively vulnerable?

How about administrative personnel at the Pentagon and the bloated number of flag-rank officers?

How about giving the Navy back its own design bureau & shipyards?

DOD is loaded with toys that are too complex.

When the McCain got crushed by a freighter, stories came out about how the ship was loaded with gee-wiz technology that wasn’t working because it broke and nobody could fix it.

Just stay with the Burke hulls and bolt in user friendly, durable stuff.

And carrier captains who can avoid collisions with commercial shipping? How can such a thing happen?

The Navy needs to find a way to protect surface ships from hypersonic missiles.

Let’s start with protecting them from freight ships the size of an island!! :)

Maybe they need BASIC 2025 CAR TECHNOLOGY.

Of course it’s not the same but it IS scary just how backwardsd it is that a carrier could get hit.

I haven't read the details, but my assumption was the vessel was in port with a harbor pilot, so either the pilot effed up, or there was bad communication between the vessels and/or the port authority.

That’s if the Navy can resist the temptation to gold-plate the Fincantieri frigates. You need lots of frigates.

You guys are looking at the big equipment, however what it takes to supply a ship has to be looked into. Virtually every supply contract is going to be padded.

This is from yesterday. Don’t think either ship was in port. Of course, the carrier’s captain’s career is history, that’s just how the Navy rolls. But details are still lacking.

I well remember contractors hoodwinking commanders with gee-whiz stories about how their software was going to solve everything.

The commander wanted to make his mark looking for advancement so would sign on. Usually the software was crapola and nobody thought about how expensive and work intensive it was to keep the data up to date.

After a while the commander moved on with stories of greatness on his resume and we poor working stiff were saddled with some half-assed program with no tech support.

I’m trying to install a new garage door opener to replace the old one I installed thirty years ago.

If I can ever get it to work, it definetly will not last that long.

Exactly it is not because of tanks and planes. It is because of a huge overstaffing of civilians and too many chiefs to indian ratio.

The ONLY two places a Captain gives up responsibility for the ship is in the Panama Canal and when crossing the Sill of a Dry Dock. Pilots are only on the ship for advise.

The NTSB read out was tough to hear.

Are our Blackhawks outdated/broken?

Was the instructor willingly negligent?
