'Don’t think the numbers are real': GOP senator joins Dems in doubting Senate's budget
Raw Story / MSN ^ | Feb 13 | Story by Sarah K. Burris,Matt Laslo

WASHINGTON — The Senate began its budgeting process after waiting several weeks for the House to move forward with its process. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is spearheading the effort, and he's promising others on the committee it isn't a waste of their time.

"Are you guys just doing a fruitless exercise today?" Raw Story asked Graham at the Capitol on Wednesday.

But Democrats didn't seem to be on the same page — nor was Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).

“I’m concerned with the budget on our side that’s being proposed, and then I don’t think the numbers are real,” Paul told reporters. "I can’t vote for the budget if it’s not real."

"An $800 billion discrepancy, if I don't get a good explanation for that, I can't vote for the legislation," Paul added. "It's just fiction, then."

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) told Raw Story, "This is starting to feel like a fruitless exercise. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even get the majority of the Republican votes."

Please Freepers: Trust Rand a lot more than Lindsey Graham (the chairman!).

Patience and see how it goes. Besides, the House is constitutionally the one who has to act first!!

“Please Freepers: Trust Rand a lot more than Lindsey Graham (the chairman!).”

I’m definitely with you on that, at least as far as the budget is concerned.

It doesn’t matter who FReepers trust.

Unless there is an election in the next few months that I don’t know about.

In the end, Paul and his ilk will either be right or wrong, and I think they will be right.

Whether they win or not is a different story.

Time will tell.

And it doesn’t matter AT ALL who trusts whom. At least not right now.

That decision was made in November.

If I were a powerful person playing 4D chess, I’d try to have the government shut down for a month or so. Let the American people really see that they don’t need much of what government claims to do.

I give Graham some (backhanded) credit for his career in being able to successfully (for his own benefit) play both sides of the aisle, Establishment Elite member that he is.

He now has no choice (as regards to his own benefit) but to take this tack. IMHO, it will bring about his downfall, but he is screwed either way.

Heavily Dem slanted article. Total propaganda.

Not worth posting IMO.

Regular order budget appropriations solve this issue. All agencies are supposed to submit their budget requests for appropriations line item by line item.

No agency has actually been doing this for 14 years now, so why is congress funding them at all? If the agencies had to do this they wouldn't even know where to start! They would be forced to craft fully transparent and accurate spending budgets that would in itself weed out what is indefensible spending (money laundering).

Yep, this whole clown show in the US Senate is GOP_E business as usual. President Trump will have to rely on the US House to do all the heavy lifting

“If the agencies had to do this they wouldn’t even know where to start!”

**********

They would start by issuing a contract to bring in outsiders to do it for them, and then find a way to justify extending the contract to help with mid-year reviews. Situation normal.

But your overall point is a good one.

Most people simply don’t understand the complexity and pressure of being one of those Representatives or Senators who have been in office for decades and are supposed to be leaders in doing what’s best for America. Think about it. On the one hand they talk about all the big problems America faces (most of which they created) and how they intend to address those problems by doing more of what caused them in the first place. Then, there’s the need to give the appearance of caring about their constituents when all they really care about is themselves and the folks lining their pockets. Maintaining the masquerade while in the public eye is getting harder and harder to do, and with DOGE exposing to the public what’s really been going on the pressure must be enormous.

100% spot on.

Unfortunately a large portion of GOP voters are not very discriminating when it comes to voting. They keep electing the same scoundrels over and over again. Until that changes, little will change.

Just use the last so-called “balanced budget” and change the year on it to 2025.

Why is it “so called”?

Because we know that congress couldn’t even be honest with something like the budget.

They leave actual known expenditures out of their published budgets (they call it “offline”) so they can pretend their proposed spending is less than it will actually be....

If there is a way to lie, cheat, steal, blow smoke and hide the truth you can bet that congress has honed it to a fine edge.

Besides, the House is constitutionally the one who has to act first!!

You're absolutely right, but the Dhimms have made that absolutely moot. A few years ago the Senate (Schumer) decided they needed to pass a spending bill because the Republicans were filibustering the bill the Dhimms wanted and the House hadn't acted yet. They literally stripped everything but the title out of an unrelated bill that had passed the House, filled it with their budget and authorization data, and declared success. That way they could work out all the details in a 'reconciliation' process that was immune to the filibuster.

It was obviously and blatantly unConstitutional, but that didn't bother the Dhimms at all.
