Gavin Newsom to Ban Plants Within 5 Feet of Homes in Fire-Prone Areas
Breitbart ^ | February 7, 2025 | Joel B. Pollak

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) plans to ban the use of plants within five feet of residential homes in what are designated as “fire-prone” areas — which could include much of the state of California, given the recent wildfires.

..... Snip.....

The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

Gov. Gavin Newsom is ordering the state to speed up its rulemaking for wildfire safety around homes in fire-prone areas that would ban most plants and combustible materials like mulch and wood fencing.

The rules would require people to clear an area within 5 feet of homes — dubbed zone zero, or an ember resistant zone — of any flammable materials, with the exception of mature trees. The rules would apply only in areas where the risk of fire is rated “very high,” in accordance with the state’s fire-risk designations.

The rules could be costly for homeowners, who would have to tear up vegetation all around their homes.

The Liberal Dem response to a tragedy is more regulation and bans. The Republican / Trump response is to work 24 / 7 to fix it.

And he’s preparing a Brown Shirt Army at this moment to enforce it.

So you love the idea of the government telling you where you can plant bushes around your house?

It’s the blowing embers that are the problem.

Completely trying to deflect the blame from himself.

So correct you are.

That said, his previous plan didn't work well, that of banning water in hydrants.

Maybe wrap around porches would be allowed if they are made 100 percent of fireproof materials.

Patios might become a standard design option. Or Zen rock gardens, as long as California doesn’t prohibit the removal of landscaping boulders from their original natural locations.

This is less than worthless and gives a false sense of protection. A decent urban/wildland firebreak is at least 20 feet, and even that’s not going to stop a Santa Ana wind-driven fire. Just the radiant heat from a hot burning/fast moving fire will jump five feet in seconds.

A Breath of Fresh Air: How Trees Help Mitigate Climate Change

From the article:
So, through photosynthesis, trees remove climate-warming carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and help us mitigate the effects of climate change.

In one year, a mature tree can absorb a half a Metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent. Altogether, forests in the U.S. offset about 16 percent—or three decades worth—of greenhouse gas emissions emitted from cars, trucks, power plants, and other sources in country. In fact, forest ecosystems are the largest land-based carbon sink on Earth.

You think it's OK for the government to tell you where to plant shrubs or trees on your own land?

When winds at 40-50 mph are whipping wildfires directly at your home, it matters not if you have plants 5 feet or even 100 feet away.

Your house is gonna be burned.
