Can the courts — can anyone — stop Trump?

Can President Donald Trump be stopped?

More precisely, since the Republican-controlled Congress seems more willing to enable than to restrain, to what extent will the legal system be capable of halting his barrage of executive orders and other questionable actions? Can blue states and private plaintiffs fight back with lawsuits — or is the gusher of Trumpian excesses too overwhelming to mount an effective counterattack?

And, most critically, are the courts — ultimately the Supreme Court — more inclined to accede to Trump’s inflated conception of presidential authority or to limit his overreach? If they dare to frustrate his will, will Trump comply, or will he precipitate a constitutional crisis?

There are reasons for tempered optimism here. Look at the dismal legal track record of the first Trump administration and in the similar initial court response to his second-term efforts. Significantly, as much as the resistance to Trump is more muted than eight years ago, the legal resistance is well-funded and organized, with state attorneys general coordinating litigation strategies and outside groups poised to bring cases, as well.

But there are also ample grounds for worry. Those challenging unlawful firings might ultimately win, for example, but might not prevail until long after the damage is done, the bureaucracy eviscerated and silenced. Same with the dismantling of agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development. The scorched earth is the point here. During his first term, the lawyers were able, at times, to rein in Trump; this Trump is brazenly ignoring legal requirements. He seems to welcome the opportunity to cross legal lines, the better to assert executive authority and dare the courts to stop him.

I don't remember them asking that question when FJB did it.

I don’t think Trump cares anymore about what they can do. They tried to kill him twice, tried to throw him in jail, tried to smear him, made up conspiracy theories about him, tried to frame him, spied on him, all of it illegal, what else can they do?

The Fags in Black Rags are giving it a hell of a shot. Weird because I don’t remember hearing anything about people voting for stooges in black robes.

Sounds like the lefties are barely pretending to love democracy anymore, now that the people voted the “wrong” way. Now they are only interested in thwarting what the American people voted for.

I hope the game plan is do it fast with executive orders and then follow them up with congress making them law. Attach a few executive orders to every bill.

By the time each one gets to the Supreme Court, they will already be codified.

It's the executive branch auditing and tending house at the executive branch. Outside of a few peripheral issues, other branches of the government have no jurisdiction.

The democrat strategy Trump’s first term was obviously to go running to a lefty judge and have everything Trump blocked. We know exactly what they’re going to do, they already telegraphed it so my belief is that Trump is ready for it and has countermeasure in place.

For some reason republicans never do the same with Obama & Biden.
