Disney blocks Ron DeSantis’ Florida power play with a royal family clause

Forget about Disney princesses. Mickey Mouse might have just proved who’s the real king of Florida.

The Walt Disney Co. used a legal clause that name checks King Charles III to apparently thwart Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ attempt to strip the company of its self-governance power in the state.

For nearly a year, state legislators, encouraged by DeSantis, have sought to exert more control over the company’s Florida-based theme parks by passing a bill that would dissolve Disney’s special tax district. DeSantis also wanted to rename the area the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and plant a new board of supervisors to oversee it.

Until recently, there had been no major public discussion about dissolving Disney’s long-established special district, which it’s occupied for 55 years, leading DeSantis’ critics to question its timing and the speed at which the governor acted against the company.

So, Disneyland and Disneyworld are effectively ambassadorships and beyond the power of the US government?

Somebody should let Trump know.

I thought Americans didn’t buy that Kings and Queens crap. Burger King and Diary Queen were acceptable but that was it.

This is a two year old story and DeSantis went on to win the case.

If Disneyland sold itself to the Crown and given ambassadorship status, unfortunately that may be beyond US law like all embassies.

I thought this had all been settled over a year ago.
I didn’t think any American business contract contingent on descendants of the English King would be valid.

Well, as The Godfather said, "Make them an offer they can't refuse". Cut off "My Little Pony's" head, and leave it in their bed.

Apparently, it wasn’t settled the way we wanted it to be settled. They pulled an ambassador status to put the issue to rest.

At least, that is how I interpret it.

The foul upon which embassies sit still belongs to the host country. The embassy can be forced to move to another spot. North Dakota for instance. Maybe Disney can move there.

Makes me wonder if the Disney Exec’s have seen their psychiatrist recently. They need a mental health checkup.

The article is from 2023. I am astonished by the number of people here who comment on articles that they don’t read.
