WASHINGTON, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Aides to Elon Musk charged with running the U.S. government human resources agency have locked career civil servants out of computer systems that contain the personal data of millions of federal employees, according to two agency officials.

Since taking office 11 days ago, President Donald Trump has embarked on a massive government makeover, firing and sidelining hundreds of civil servants in his first steps toward downsizing the bureaucracy and installing more loyalists.

Musk, the billionaire Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab CEO and X owner tasked by Trump to slash the size of the 2.2 million-strong civilian government workforce, has moved swiftly to install allies at the agency known as the Office of Personnel Management.

The two officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation, said some senior career employees at OPM have had their access revoked to some of the department's data systems.

The systems include a vast database called Enterprise Human Resources Integration, which contains dates of birth, Social Security numbers, appraisals, home addresses, pay grades and length of service of government workers, the officials said.

There's a certain amount of slant in the reporting, but I expect this is a real story.

Yes. Seems a bit odd. Should a tech billionaire really be controlling that kind of information.

Maybe he has been advised to do this by a certain President?

“ some senior career employees at OPM have had their access revoked to some of the department’s data systems”
*****************************************

The operative word here is “senior”. Trump’s people likely had good reason for this restriction.

Musk doesn’t have the authority. I think he is just the scapegoat.

In the past there’s been Chinese penetrations of OPM systems. This may be in relation to that. See if there’s evidence of someone leaving the cyber door open.

The title is purposely very misleading. The people who revoked access for some employees are themselves employees of the Office of Personnel Management.

More than likely those who lost access are about to be unemployed.

Yeah, after all, it can’t ALL be Trump’s fault.

Right. For all we know, this could be about a couple of senior managers who NEVER access the system, but are automatically given access because of their positions. For years now, a simple 10-second act can be blown up into a weeks-long news cycle.

I suspect it is real too and it is one more reason to hate the slanted lying media that tries to get people pissed off to suit their desired worldview (which is actual ‘ethical journalism’ taught in the best schulen).

Lets give this a regurgitation from the other slant (just as accurate).
“Federal bureaucrats have found themselves in a typical position during a presidential transition; uncertainty over employment. While typical for most workers in this country, federal civil servants typically view themselves as immune to discipline or termination. As part of the promised restructuring of government, some DOGE officials, under authority of the President, have taken control of the OPM. Some current OPM officials were apparently locked out of their systems as part of the Presidents novel paid leave program or routine transition reviews. None of the complaining officials spoke on the record to Reuters, complaining anonymously for fear of termination for cause for discussing confidential government business with unauthorized persons.”

How many alpha males, and even females, are in President Trump’s administration? At what point will there have to be some power assertions?

I mean, Trump and Musk are both wealthy CEO types. How will that work long term? Maybe the Boss has already taken care of that out of sight.

A long, long time ago, our esteemed president George W. Bush proposed the Patriot Act. Wiser people than I, recognized that as a bad idea. I foolishly thought that the War on Terror was such a big deal, that the Patriot Act was probably going to be a good thing. I was wrong.

And perhaps I have learned nothing.

I figure that if the Democrats ever get control again, they will do anything, ignore any law, take any step. I put nothing past them. If they get control, it’s all over because they won’t fool around.

Which is why I don’t want Trump to hesitate or fool around. This action by Musk? Maybe it’s extreme. Maybe it’s a bad idea. But I think it’s time for our side to stop fooling around. I say Go For It.

This could be to prevent anyone from reclassifying certain employees so they have civil service protections.

They had better lock them down. If I was called in to do this to my old agency. Everyone would get a week off while I had all the computers locked and word stdies done to see which of the employess had discussed doing things against the new administration.

I KNOW what some of those people were saying to each other, and they need to be gone. If the computers are not locked down, there is a “whole bunch of bleaching going on out there”.

With Reuters I expect a large slant in all of their stories.
These un-named officials are probably a couple of corrupt stuck pigs and they have been caught.
