Ambulance response times during life-threatening emergencies jumped in the last year, according to revealed data — as the FDNY blames ongoing staffing and recruiting troubles.

Average ambulance response time to life-threatening emergencies jumped more than 34 seconds from eight minutes and 14-seconds in the 2024 fiscal year to eight minutes and 48 seconds for the first quarter of the 2025 fiscal year running from July 1 through November, according to the mayor’s management report.

The FDNY goal is to bring ambulance response times to such calls to under seven minutes, the report said.

The response times have creeped up in recent years. In fiscal year 2022, the ambulance response time to life-threatening emergencies was seven minutes and 26 seconds.

How terrible. Mismanagement?

My take is we are graduating too many humanities majors who are not qualified to do technically difficult or physically demanding jobs - but that's just one a$$#0%3's opinion.

I have a trusted friend who used to be an EMT.
You spend lots of your time trying to save people who are dying.
One of her co-workers couldn’t handle it anymore.
They both got out of EMT but one got out in a bad way.

I’d suggest that most Americans face more than 8 minutes before an EMT comes to the rescue.

Some are saying that being an EMT is a nasty job in NYC. The “clients” are low lifes.

I don’t know what it’s like in NYC, but in a big city near me an EMT makes only about 60% of what a police officer makes.

I never quite understood that. The police officer job is more dangerous, but EMT training is much more involved.

By comparison, average response time to life-threatening medical emergencies solely by fire companies held steady at five minutes and 55 seconds, a second lower than the last fiscal year.

Still, the target FDNY response time goal is four minutes and 38 seconds for life-threatening emergencies.

What is the agenda of the article? more pay by union

yet how come these guys do so much better?

We go on a lot of minor injury calls. We even went on a call for a toad in a shower stall. These eat up a lot of time.

People are under the false assumption that if they take a ride in an ambulance they get front of the line privileges. Not true. Everyone in an ER is continually triaged and cases taken in order of seriousness.

The homeless and druggies occupy a lot of our time too.

A lot of elderly in our area so a lot of fall calls.

It is no more than DEI.

Ooh, how about hiring that fat F@#$, 500# broad (literally) who is presently suing Lyft ‘cause she could not get into the car? She would be ideal as ballast for vehicles driving on snow.

Who wants to respond to emergencies in crime-laden areas?

Response times are exacerbated but staff shortages (low pay), but also by the widespread misuse of EMS for minor complaints.

Im constantly amazed by how unaware/self absorbed/narcissistic/pampered(”privileged”) certain elements of our coasts are.

A high twenties would be normal here and thats just to get a deputy that is going to argue with the voice on the AED. When Pa passed away it took 45 minutes for the ambulance to arrive and another 15-20 to get him out of the house.

No, he was only about 170-180 at the time. I could have carried him out myself if I had known these idiots forgot the body board back at the station.

Not that being in the ambulance helped much. They guy in back didnt know how to use an ambu bag properly. I told the driver before hand, “Dont go [this way] because the bridge is out.” He then turned that way and got us stuck down in a swamp trying to turn around because...help me here...THE BRIDGE WAS OUT!

From the time of the event to arrival at the hospital was around 2 hours.

Thats just one of my stories about local emergency crews and its not just EMT. One night about 2AM I watched and listened to a huge fleet of fire trucks driving around to the west/north of me for about an hour while my neighbors flaming house illuminated the sky south of me with a bright orange glow. No, a call didnt help. The fire chief later accused the people who lived there of arson “because the damage was so extensive.”

These assholes are crying about 30 seconds?

To get those fire response times, you need a station about every 4 blocks. To man those stations, you need more union members.
