During the past seven years, the cost to California lettuce growers of complying with the state’s environmental, labor and food safety regulations has increased by a whopping 63.7%, according to a study commissioned by the Monterey County Farm Bureau and prepared by Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, professors Lynn Hamilton, Ph.D., and Michael McCullough, Ph.D.

If you see expensive lettuce at the grocery store it’s the fault of the greedy growers

Eat cabbage. It is more nutritious, has a better shelf life and can be grown outside California.

A blast from the past on cause of high food prices

“ Inflation is coming down. It’s now lower in America than any other major economy in the world,” Biden said. “The cost of eggs, milk, chicken, gas, and so many other essential items have come down.”

“But for all we’ve done to bring prices down, there are still too many corporations in America ripping people off: price gouging, junk fees, greedflation, shrinkflation,” the president continued.

“ Well, it’s going to stop. Americans, we’re tired of being played for suckers,” Biden said to resounding applause. “And that’s why we’re going to keep these guys — keep on them and get the prices down.”

Well since I don’t eat vegetarians, and my food eats grass I think I am OK with that.

At least, for now, lettuce farmers can use enough water to grow crops. Interestingly, the Santa Cruz Farm Bureau supported a push to meter ag wells so the water table could be monitored. Salt water intrusion is a problem in the area. Why on earth measuring depth and water quality of existing municipal wells wouldn’t provide the data is a baffler. The farmers I know were concerned that it’s a short step from collecting data with meters to charging for use. A proposed go around to meter wells was keeping tabs on electrical use. Don’t know if that was implemented but a friend installed solar panels to irrigate his apple orchard of 50+ acres.

isn’t eating animals that are vegetarians sort of like eating a vegan diet?

Labor costs could be reduced by using prisoners to volunteer 1/2 day off their time with a few coins if they try to escape deal off and time added.

People do things based on incentives.
