Poland warns against restarting Russia gas supplies
BBC ^ | 27/1/2025 | Oliver Smith Faisal Islam

"Andrzej Duda told the BBC that the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which have not been used since 2022, "should be dismantled".

This, he said, would mean the likes of Germany would not be tempted to restore Russian supplies to boost its own struggling economy.

"I can only hope that European leaders will learn lessons from Russia's aggression against Ukraine and that they will push through a decision to never restore the pumping of gas through this pipeline," he said.

The Polish president, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, insisted that economic sanctions against Russia were working and European countries should resist pressure from companies to re-establish business links.

President Duda of Poland represents the other half of Polish politics. If anything those people are even more anti-Russian than PM Tusk.

I guess it's time to divide Poland between Germany and Russia again.

Perhaps the Germans and Russians should talk about the partition of Poland again.

Poland is the best armed Euro NATO member.
Given your comment, for good reasons. You are the sort of character they are planning for.

Duda and etc. are well aware where the hostiles are likely to be. I think a while back he mentioned that Polands guns can point in “all directions”.

Germany absolutely isn’t in shape to fight anyone at the moment.

So you support the Nazi-Soviet plan of 1939?

Most parties in Poland realize that as long as Russia has an imperialist mindset, that this will be a threat to Poland etc.

Germany should be putting its nuclearpowerplants back in action.

Ukraine doesn’t sound like they’ll be letting Russian gas thru, even after the fighting ends.

Russia is going to have a big problem actually getting any of their gas to Europe.

On the prospect of a deal between Ukraine and Russia now that US President Donald Trump has taken office, Duda insisted that no peace talks could take place without the participation of Ukraine.

Duda is in a panicked state. Trump has indicated, so far, he wants only bilateral negotiations with Russia. Not only does Trump personally dislike Zelensky and Ukraine's government, but a deal will never get done if Ukraine, the EU, or any other European state has veto power over its terms.

Trump was absolutely opposed to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline that supplied Russian gas to the EU, and Germany in particular, and in 2019 imposed sanctions on any company that worked on the pipeline.

Poland is arming itself and should be doing it faster.

Poland’s government needs to not rely on any other power to help Poland. Meaning:
1. the same kind of national guard setup as Switzerland
2. spending more on defense - 4% is good, but needs to be higher
3. Bring the Baltic states into a military setup with Poland.
4. Find a way to address Hungarian and Slovak concerns (around gas)
5. Tie into the concerns of Romania and Finland on preventing Muscowite aggression.

Ultimately this is a Miedzymorze (between seas) solution - where central Europe from Finland to Greece - needs to be strong and have strong ties with both east and west

“Ukraine doesn’t sound like they’ll be letting Russian gas thru, even after the fighting ends.

What that means is since gas is fungible, some other sucker will supply Europe at much greater cost, while hostile countries get cheap energy which will result in rapid military advancement.

They are, already. Russia is shipping LNG by tanker.
That is probably the reason for the high priority of the specific EO Trump signed on Day 1, unfreezing LNG export permits.

And that is one concrete reason why Russia probably wouldnt have invaded if Trump were president in 2022. Nordstream 2 would still have been unable to proceed. Biden permitting Nordstream 2 is IMHO a significant factor in giving Putin “permission”.

Strictly IMO. The Poles should do what they believe is right for them. Germans killed them and Russians killed them in wholesale fashion in 1937 to 1945. God bless them they fought the battle. The Battle Of Britain was part of their contribution. God bless the Poles. All in my opinion. People worth our support .

The Poles are a great people with the geopolitical misfortune to sit astride a traditional E-W invasion route on ground with no significant natural barriers.
