Ukraine Index: Tracking developments in the Ukraine war By: Michael E. O’Hanlon, Constanze Stelzenmüller, and David Wessel Research Support: Alejandra Rocha, Sophie Roehse, and Mallika Yadwad January 22, 2025

"On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The war follows on Russian territorial aggression against its neighbor that began in 2014 with the illegal annexation of Crimea and a proxy war in the eastern Donbas region.

Tracking developments in the Ukraine war, the Brookings Institution — in partnership with The Washington Post — presents the Ukraine Index, which compiles security, economic, and political data presented in graphic form.

Our purpose is to provide updated information on such key metrics as changes in the control of Ukrainian territory by the two sides, the amount of support for Ukraine from the U.S. and Europe as well the political support for continued aid, and the health of the Ukrainian economy. Our Ukraine Index is intended to contribute to our understanding of this conflict, and thereby to a more informed public debate.

We will update the index regularly and expand or amend the featured data as circumstances change. The data itself is taken from a variety of sources (government, international organizations, private). Since tracking data from the Ukraine war has been under dangerous circumstances in a war zone, it is of necessity approximative or incomplete.

Security:

"The war in Ukraine, now in its third year, remains an unpredictable conflict, yet the Ukrainian people’s unwavering bravery and resilience continue to inspire. Key battlefield trends — such as territorial control, drones and cruise missiles interceptions, and U.S. security assistance — reveal the ongoing dynamics of the conflict."

*Editor's note:

The Brookings Ukraine Index tracks security, economic, and political metrics related to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The first edition of the index was published on February 24, 2023 and the data was updated monthly until January 22, 2025. Starting February 1, 2025, the data will no longer be updated. Please send any questions and comments regarding the index to fpmedia@brookings.edu

Trump is sending the 82nd to the Mexican border and Hegseth literally had NOTHING TO SAY about Ukraine in his memo to DOD (he did mention China, though).

So NATO can forget about Trump tying down troops in Ukraine, or even giving them anymore aid. And so, if giving Putin more Ukrainian land is so important to the Europeans, they’re welcome to drag out this war as long as they want, at least as far as Trump seems to be concerned.

The Trump is repeating the neocon Happy Talk - but I think that is probably just until his important nominees like Tulsi Gabbard clear the gauntlet of the neocon fossils in the US Senate.

The outcome is very predictable -- every inch Russia has gained during this war will remain with the Russian Federation.

How’s this?

Not a DIME for ukraine.

Not one WEAPON for ukraine.

If they’re such valiant warriors, they don’t need us.

And it’s not our fight.

AT ALL.

In any way.

ciao.

The Russians are having a hard time in trying to get back the last third of the Kursk salient.

You bring a leftist take from the Brookings Institute

Did you know that 97.6% of their donations are from Democrats?

launched a full-scale invasion.... Stopped right there. Biden and Ukraine regime propoganda talking points.

Trump has the correct idea about Zelinski and Ukraine who passed and signed a law making it illegal to negotiate with Russia. Cut their aid.

Did anyone hear repeated again how pensions, solidiers pay, government workers pay, teachers pay, hospital staff pay, are all paid by the US Government for Ukraine.

Ukraine is a NATO proxy posing as an econmically viable economy. Pulling the plug on salaries and pensions means the jib is totally up.

In 2014, Putin bragged that he could take Kiev in two weeks:

I’m not sure how long two weeks is in dog years, but it’s almost three years in Russian time.

At least three years, that is.

“valiant warriors”

Lots of Ukrainians have a lot of fight in them.

Ukraine will suffer a loss of good men as great as that of Great Britain did in WW1.

Anyone who understands Russian tactics would know that Russia loves to draw their foe into a kill box and kill as many as can come. Ukraine has lost more men and equipment than they did in the Spring/Summer 2023 offensive. Russia will entertain them for as long as they come. When they quit coming Ukraine will have stopped only due to a manpower shortage and equipment shortage. Russia loves having this merry band of guests - 55K killed in 7 months, 4000 vehicles and equipment. Very productive for Russia.

Thanks for sharing. There are pro-NATO (Deep State, etc.) and pro-Russian (HistoryLegends, etc.) channels that provide similar coverage, but I think Military Summary Channel is the most even-handed in its coverage.

“Ukraine is a NATO proxy posing as an econmically viable economy. Pulling the plug on salaries and pensions means the jib is totally up.”

A lot of wealth has been transferred out of Ukraine.

Offering fast deliveries of lead could speed its return.

Ukrainians, like Russians, can live on very little.

The Ukraine war is none of our business. What happens in Ukraine has no bearing on American national sovereignty or security. Let the Russians and Ukrainians sort it out however they see fit. The United States needs to focus on issues that directly affect our nation such as securing the border, deporting illegals, eliminating the cartels, energy independence, imposing tariffs to save our manufacturing sector, abolishing the IRS and federal income tax, gutting the Deep State and prosecuting the traitors to our Republic, ending Wokeness, and restoring American rule over the Panama Canal.

President Trump is doing an excellent job. He has suspended aid to Ukraine. I support his peace deal as peace is better than the U.S. getting involved in this fiasco militarily. But I would prefer if he would entirely ignore Ukraine. Lets keep the focus on defending American sovereignty and territorial integrity. And let the Ukrainians worry about Ukraine.
