California's food industry readies to fight 'the cruelty and the stupidity' of Trump
San Francisco Chronicle / SFGate.com ^ | Jan 24, 2025 | By Karen Palmer, Contributing LA Food Editor

On Jan. 20, Donald Trump was sworn in, for a second time, as the president of the United States. As the country begins to see the early effects of a second Trump term (including the signing of dozens of executive orders), SFGATE set out to decipher what his new administration and its proposed policies could mean for the food, agriculture and restaurant industries in California.

Trump has made no secret of his disdain for the Golden State, consistently referring to Gov. Gavin Newsom as “Newscum” in Los Angeles wildfire-related posts on Truth Social. The president has also touted plans for the wide-ranging deportation of undocumented workers (millions of whom live in California) and the enactment of tariffs on international goods, which could heavily throttle imports to the Port of Los Angeles, the busiest port in North America. From Central Valley agriculture to Bay Area TikTok restaurant influencers, Trump could have a far-reaching impact on the food industry across the board.

‘The cruelty and the stupidity’

One of Trump’s biggest promises during his 2024 campaign was the deportation of undocumented workers — the “largest domestic deportation operation in American history,” as he put it while campaigning. He’s taken a hard-line stance on immigration, and as recently as this week, his newly installed government has announced plans to deploy troops to the border as the Justice Department puts pressure on U.S. attorneys to prosecute officials not following Trump’s immigration policies. Additionally, among Trump’s first executive orders were reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border and seeking to end birthright citizenship for those born to undocumented workers.

Lots of fearmongering that without all the essential illegal aliens, the state’s economy will completely fall apart.

More accurately, the state’s leadership has an unconcealed disdain for Trump.

It’s not Trump’s fault that Big Ag hasn’t been investing in itself to modernize in order to minimize manpower.

Without CA illegals many of the excuses for “Homelessness” pretty well disappears for anyone sane and not strung out on drugs.
American unemplyment falling to 1.5-2.5%?
May have to bring back workfare for even more reductions.

I seem to remember a very similar Democrat argument about the economic impact of ending slavery...

Before I escaped Ca-Ca’lafornia back in ‘89 one of the universities was close to perfecting automated tomato picking machines.
Legislature forbade all funding and killed it.
But you know, the engineering and maybe the prototype should still be around.

Typical lib. The article is about illegal aliens. I keep waiting for libs to care about Americans and US citizens, but it never happens.

Apparently, no one has explained to Karen Palmer, retard, that her governor and the mayor of Los Angeles teamed up to burn part of Los Angeles.

What complete BS. Back in the day there were work visas for Mexicans to come to Central Valley California legally during harvest. When the harvest season waned they would go back to Mexico, rinse and repeat. That program could be amped up again.

The Bracero program. Ended by Democrat Cesar Chavez and his gaggle of pickers and pukers. For one, its closure impacted the nursery growing industry, which never recovered in California.

An interesting thing in Karen’s bio - if she is not writing the is eating ...

If that is true, I’m surprised that her picture actually fits in that little circle.
