Trump should end higher education dependence on student visas
Washington Examiner ^ | January 24, 2025 1:58 pm | Jeremiah Poff

If President Donald Trump is looking for a way to curtail immigration excesses while dealing a blow to the left-wing higher education cabal, he need not look further than reforming the student visa program.

International students have been part of the American higher education system for decades with good reason. An education in the United States is a wonderful opportunity, which is a testament to the quality of education that U.S. institutions can provide. It is also good for American students, who have the opportunity to form relationships with and learn from foreign students.

But, as it is currently practiced, the admittance of international students to American colleges and universities, especially to the most prestigious institutions, has become less about cultural exchange and genuine education and more about bringing the institutions an easy and plentiful cashflow as native enrollment declines and fewer students are willing to pay the obscene prices of a college education.

Foreign students graduating from American universities will, in many cases, acquire an H-1B worker visa that allows them to fill a job that could otherwise be held by an American citizen.

Student visas have become a welfare program for elite universities, which are dominated by the political Left and have become havens for anti-American ideas. It is here that the worst excesses of terrorist sympathizers have been perpetrated, as last year’s pro-Hamas demonstrations and barracking of Jewish students showed. Many of the students most hostile to the nation quickly turn around and fill American jobs.

Institutional incentives

The primary benefit and motivation for a college or university to admit a student from a foreign country is financial. Most students from foreign countries interested in attending a public American university pay high out-of-state tuition rates.

Most native students receive...

Any university that takes foreign students should not be eligible for research grants.

Trump should end all federal government participation in schools at all levels except for schools on military reservations. He should ban all foreign sponsored organizations at universities. Trump would need Congress for all that and Congress would never approve, but it must be done if we are to got our educational systems back on track.

There should be NO research or any other government grants to schools. All come with myriad other strings attached and many pervert science and give a new meaning to “political science.”

Colleges and universities love foreign students because they pay full freight for tuition, allowing these colleges and universities to fund their increasingly growing numbers of non-academic faculty, most of whom are occupying DEI-related non-teaching positions.

It's time to throttle back on this nonsense.

Not to mention Departments/"Perfessers" of imaginary DEI disciplines.

I would restrict those student visas to pre-med/nursing students.

We need more doctors/nurses in America.

Obviously, we don't need more Marxists.

True. Because they'll just go back to China and work on their AI.

AI is the "Manhattan Project" of our time.

The Chinese are VERY SMART. They send their kids over to our colleges to STEAL SECRETS, with education being an afterthought (since they’re so far ahead, they don’t really learn much here).

I have mixed feelings about this. Kill that cash flow (foreign students’ paying full tuition, fees, and usually in their 1st 2 years, housing and such), and the price of a college education for US students will become considerably more unaffordable. You’ll probably kill a lot of the smaller college towns too, so now any kids going to college end up in REALLY lib environments... We don’t need more lib arts and law majors, for the most part, but, we do need STEM types, Ag students, forestry students, etc...

It only became "unaffordable" when the feral government started handing out "student loans" like candy to dumb eighteen year olds who borrowed however much the universities told them to. The universities could then raise tuition as high as they wanted because the dumb eighteen year olds would borrow it and give it to them.

College will always be "unaffordable" as long as government is involved.

Not only that there is chronic shortage of American students wanting to opt for STEM curriculums. Flunk out rates are highest in STEM.

I thought cold fusion was the project to save humanity with limitless energy. AI is nothing more than search engines on steroids, only problem is it requires lots of energy hogging servers. We already have plenty of brownouts with electric cars, air conditioners in hot summers and during calm wind days and cloudy days and nights.

The first nation with a superintelligent AI is going to gain a massive edge in war. Obviously, we don't want to be left behind.

We're in this race whether we want to or not.

It's like acquiring nukes.

Most likely, both China and USA will develop superintelligent AI, other nations like Russia will get there eventually.

It may be one of the reasons we saw all the Tech Titans lining up behind Trump.

Tech needs more ENERGY to run servers. They are hoping Trump will drill baby drill. I have used Microsoft products for 35 years, they are still sending me software updates for Windows. Only uninformed people think all of a sudden Microsoft and others will invent something more intelligent than human brain.

And then you have the opposite viewpoint expressed by Isaac Asimov in The Feeling of Power ...

A lot of state university STEM departments particular the grad programs would collapse without foreign students - Chinese, Indians, etc. Perhaps that should happen, so these institutions are forced to return to a responsible reality.
