Report: India to Take Back 18,000 Indian Migrants Living in U.S. Illegally

Indian officials are preparing to repatriate roughly 18,000 Indian migrants who have been living in the United States illegally, according to a recent report.

“People familiar with the matter” informed Bloomberg that the Indian government is prepared to work with President Donald Trump and his administration to “identify and take back all its citizens” who have been in the U.S. illegally.

“As part of India-US cooperation on migration and mobility, both sides are engaged in a process to deter illegal migration,” Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, told Bloomberg. “This is being done to create more avenues for legal migration from India to the US.”

The majority of the Indians who have been living in the U.S. illegally are reportedly “youth from western India.”

While the actual number “could be much higher,” Bloomberg said the U.S. has identified roughly 18,000 Indian migrants who have been living in the country illegally. The Indian government is reportedly preparing to “verify and start the process of deportation.”

Bloomberg noted that “in return” for India’s cooperation with the U.S., the Indian government “hopes that the Trump administration” will “protect legal immigration channels” that its citizens use to come to the U.S.:

In return for its cooperation, India hopes that the Trump administration would protect legal immigration channels used by its citizens to enter the US such as student visas and the H-1B program for skilled workers. Indian citizens accounted for almost three-fourths of the 386,000 H-1B visas granted in 2023, according to official data.

Nope. Sending 18,000 illegals back in exchange for bringing in 250,000 H1-Bs is not winning.

I’d rather keep them and stop the endless invasion of h1b /student visa scammers. I know they make great wine experts but we would be better off without them

It’s winning because they’re illegal. Rome wasn’t built in a day. It’s a great start!

My guess is that most of them overstayed their visa. Still illegal. Toss them out. But the first priority is to get rid of the illegals who have committed crimes since they got here.

If these are overstays on perfectly legal visas, then they are an entirely separate category from those who swarm the border, claiming “asylum”. These would actually benefit India by returning to their homeland and providing a modest upgrade in the level of technical expertise they had gained while employed in the United States.

Sure, they may have to take a pay cut, but they would bring a lot back to the employers in India. Then they could apply for entry on a full visa, once they had worked their way through the legal problems introduced by their illegal visa violation.

Ok, now, get EVERY ambassador to commit to doing the same.
No exceptions.
I still get irritated when I recall the Irish whatever he was announcing to the media that he was “Concerned” that our immigration laws might be applied to his country too.
He wanted assurances that Ireland would be exempted.
I say no, EVERYONE who is illegal gets sent back.
And asking to be last should make you first!

Indians are becoming a big part of the landscape. Where I live in North Texas, there are Indian grocery stores popping up everywhere. Like it or not, they are here to stay, and we’re going to need them to win elections.
