This Is What Happened Last Time a Cabinet Nomination Was Rejected (John Tower)
Time ^ | 2/3/17 | Elizabeth King

By the time George H.W. Bush officially nominated him for Secretary of Defense in 1988, the FBI had already begun investigating Tower, the LA Times reported in 1989. Specifically, the agency was looking into concerns regarding conflicts of interest Tower had within the department of defense, and allegations that he was an alcoholic and “womanizer.”

These issues arose during Tower’s confirmation hearings, as fellow Republicans and Democrats alike raised concerns about their former colleague’s drinking problem and accused him of having affairs. Predictably, Tower denied that he had a drinking problem, testifying, “I am a man of some discipline.” But two members of the Senate came forward with new allegations to the contrary, weakening Tower’s favorability.

The FBI’s investigation looked into 69 allegations against Tower, but didn’t go into any salacious details. However, based on information given by interviewees, the agency determined that Tower drank excessively in the 1970s, but that he’d made efforts to reduce his alcohol consumption starting in 1983. The report didn’t reveal any illegal activity, but investigators determined “the investigation did confirm a prior pattern of alcohol abuse, as well as the Senator’s continuing sporadic use of alcohol, with indications that he had greatly reduced his consumption levels during 1983-1989.”

Same old playbook.

Same position.

Same allegations.

Oh, and instead of John Tower, we got Dick Cheney.

Now on the one hand, that was a good thing, since Cheney was House whip and his departure opened up the whip position, to which Newt Gingrich ran and won. And thus he was second in line when Bob Michaels retired in 1994. And then became speaker.

But in the other hand...

Didn’t the RATS get ahold of Tower’s FBI file and leak it?

You can always attack Republicans on the basis of character. Vague accusations are enough.

Democrats? Clinton? Biden? Obama? Make all the the claims you want — character issues are meaningless. The media just won’t care.

Bill Clinton has the alcoholic’s red nose. That’s understandable as he needs alcohol to tolerate being married to Hillary.

I have often pondered over the years of watching these events and the digging up of old character flaws that have either faded into the recesses of time or have resolved themselves with the passage of time or the Good Lord, why does watching this spectacle irratate me so much.

Maybe the oyster thinks the same thing about the bit of sand?

A whole person is not just their snapshot in time. They change, grow, mature. Sometimes in miraculous ways. While Jesus recognized the human condition is flawed, He encouraged us to make changes in our lives and walk the walk of forgiveness.

This is where I observe the extreme divergence between us. People on the Right have an ability to see the growth of the individual and forgive. The Left finds every pox mark, every flaw, every piece of sand to negate a person. This is not healthy for a free nation.

It is in their quest for power we find them unable to forgive, unable to grow themselves as part of the human condition. Observe them when they ask questions and talk over the response the contortions of their faces. It is not inside them to have grace around delicate matters of discussion.

These are consent hearings, not the judgement box of God.

Time magazine article from February, 2017.
They should just dust it off, change the names and reprint it.
The primary difference is that the dems are much more shrill and pathetic.

[Bill Clinton has the alcoholic’s red nose.]

Is that what is referred to as “a gin blossom”?

As a baby he abused his parents to the point of despair, and engaged in blackmail, demanding more food and soiling his dipers and then screaming for yet more food...

For god’s sake...

I’ve heard people mention it - there was a local guy who did commercials - I remember on vividly in 2008 - they did not put enough make-up on his nose - it really stood out

I always figured that was where the band got its name - a guy from the Dallas office when I worked for (______) told me he worked with some of the band members in a record store in college (in Arizona).

They had a couple of good songs.

Same old FBI. So my assumption that they have gone bad in recent years is way off base. They have been the thugs for a few generations. Peter Strzk certainly fit right in.

They had anonymous reports that he was out with very young women. These turned out to be his daughters to whom he was very devoted. Sometime after he was rejected, he tragically died in a plane crash along with one or another of his daughters.
I always thought what was done to him was absolutely horrible.

“womanizer”

We had one of those for two terms as President about three decades ago.

The media just won’t care.

On the bright side, the media has so beclowned itself with their lies and obfuscations that they’ve lost audience. The people just don’t care what the media does or does not care about anymore.

A general who led troops to victory in the Civil War was fond of drink. He later became President.

Republicans should use props for the confirmation hearings. I would like to see all the men wearing dresses shown with their lack of accomplishments aside from their fashion sense or lack thereof.
