Los Angeles Catholic Archbishop José Gomez called for prayers Thursday for victims of California’s catastrophic wildfires, while asserting that “we don’t know why these disasters happen.”
At a special Mass held at the Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels for those who have been affected by the California wildfires, the archbishop commended the victims, as well as firefighters and first responders, to God’s provident care.
In his homily, Gomez likewise touched on the mystery of evil and the ancient question of why a good God would permit terrible things to happen to seemingly innocent people.

Yep. L.A. is an enormous area and millions of people live nowhere near hills and canyons. The media wants us to think that the entire basin is burning. Not even remotely accurate.

I’m not saying God sent this as judgement, because I have no way of knowing that, but I will say that God is able to use this to bring people to Him, IF they will. We’re all sinners, and as a nation, we are corrupt; and the culture of Hollywood is especially corrupt. God is moving in the midst of us; many are having their eyes opened and turning to God. We deserve judgement, but God is merciful and desires all to be saved, having sent Himself, in the person of Jesus, to pay for our sins. Of course, all will not repent, so sadly all will not be saved, but whosoever will, come.
