A large reservoir in Pacific Palisades that is part of the Los Angeles water supply system was out of use when a ferocious wildfire destroyed thousands of homes and other structures nearby.
Officials told The Times that the Santa Ynez Reservoir had been closed for repairs to its cover, leaving a 117 million gallon water storage complex empty in the heart of the Palisades.
The revelation comes among growing questions about why firefighters ran out of water while battling the blaze. Numerous fire hydrants in higher-elevation streets of the Palisades went dry, leaving firefighters struggling with low water pressure as they combated the flames.
Had the reservoir been operable, it would have extended water pressure in the Palisades on Tuesday night, said former DWP general manager Martin Adams, an expert on the city’s water system.
A DWP official acknowledged that the reservoir’s absence likely contributed to some diminished pressure and dry hydrants in upper regions of the Palisades.

Much will be made of this.
How long had the Santa Ynez Reservoir been closed for repairs?
And that happened after they had had a wetter than usual 2024 and could have saved more water than usual in that reservoir.
No biggie, right Bass?
The Media seems to be suddenly be turning conservative for some odd reason...........
Bet that answer is expressed in YEARS!!!!
“Well, Excuuuuuse Me!”
We had the wettest February since I believe 1938. No excuse for not saving water in reservoirs.
Los Angeles has an odd rainfall history. Often big differences in rain totals from year to year.
Large amount last year, then eight months without a drop.
People need to be fired, across the board. Newsom needs to resign!
Is contingency planning banned in CA?
BASSTURD!
In the old days there were a bunch of boring white men with decades of experience managing the forests and water supply of CA.
They still had their hands full with wildfires which are normal in the state.
Once the leadership was degraded due to environmental and DEI madness this disaster was inevitable.
The DEI Syndrome.

All the more reason for an educated system of reservoirs.
And California not long ago budgeted some billions for water management infrastructure, of which they have only spent a few some millions, due to the California bureacracies hurdles in getting water projects designed, selected and approved.
The wettest February in almost a century led to tremendous growth of shrubs. Then a drier than usual (SoCal is a desert) rest of the year led to much more dry kindling.
Now there is water running all over the ground from the pipes of what used to be homes in the devastated area of Pacific Palisades.
There is a republican congressman who has a PhD in forest management. He has been trying for legislation about forest management for a while, but it never got passed. Perhaps now it will.
The article has a photo of the empty reservoir dated September ‘22.
hey man, get with it, of course it’s banned
contingency planning (like math and other complicated stuff) is a ruthless control mechanism of the patriarchal white supremacist power structure
fight the power!
Ha ha. California communist incompetence on steroids.
Keep voting for leftists Mexifornia! It’s going great!
Wait a minute, if there was no water prior to the fire, where were residents getting water?
No its starting to make sense why insurance companies in that area starting cancelling policies.
