Laken Riley Vote Shows Why Democrats Lost: John Fetterman
Newsweek via msn ^ | January 9, 2025 | Billal Rahman

Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, recently cited internal divisions within his party over immigration policies as a factor in November's electoral defeat.

...

On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act, a Republican-backed bill that seeks to curb illegal immigration by boosting border security and expanding detention powers for migrants accused of minor offenses.

Though Republicans control the Senate, they require the support of at least seven Democrats—in addition to Fetterman, who co-sponsored the bill—to secure the 60 votes needed to surpass a filibuster and advance the legislation.

...

"There's 47 of us in the Senate, and if we can't pull up with seven votes, if we can't get at least seven out of 47 … then that's the reason why we lost. That's one of them. That's one of why we lost in part," he said.

I wonder if he had a near death experience (NDE). He’s been sounding like somebody that had a (literal?) “Come to Jesus” meeting.

Fetterman is taking a page from the Clinton playbook...1996. He is triangulating from the hard left and Republicans. It will probably work, as will it for Bar Mitvah Boy Shapiro in 2028....

Yes, he does. Although that should cause him to completely disclaim the Democrat Party.

yeah wow.

Maybe he had visions while injured.

That being said, I could never have imagined an America where this vote we be anything but 98 to 2...as there are always a few weirdos from somewhere voting differently.

I grew up under Reagan, when dems were bad but not clinically insane and pure evil yet.

Regarding immigration, legal or illegal...I remember clinton’s comment.

Oddly enough, when clinton said America is more like a salad than a melting pot, I didn’t know what he meant. I was still busy chasing girls :)

When I realized it, I realized what a catastrophe that was.

We are NOT a salad.

I’m of Itailan descent. My great nephew will have as much knowledge of Italian culture and traditions as those who are here for 8 generations from England.

And that is as it should be.

It broke my heart when my nephew didn’t play the tarantella at his wedding but I survived :)

It’s not a SALAD.

We are Americans who have kept some fun traditions from the old country but they are by and by dropping off.

I’m great with that.

Ditto, although I'm a little older (I got to live through Carter's gas shortages.)

We have to realize that the ultra-radical far, far, far left psychopaths of the 70's/80's have become the entire Democratic Party of today. Unbelievable, but true.

I remember a tiny bit of what was going on under Carter, but from 8 to 11 years old, even with my political father, it wasn’t a priority :)

But I KNEW just be his presence that this Reagan guy was a special man and I was safe. It was a good feeling.

Did the radicals of the 70s and 80s already think about gay marriage and transgenderism and leaving the borders open to the complete destruction of America?

I wouldn’t be shocked if the fringe did back then.

And I just took a cursory glance and saw lawsuits on behalf of TGs starting in the late 60s...sheesh!!

It could be that. Shapiro comes across as a lot cleaner than Clinton, but he does have an Ellen Greenberg issue smoldering in his background.

My favorite Shapiro story is how he got lost in Israel and ended up at an IDF installation.

Lol.

to secure the 60 votes needed to surpass a filibuster

No more check the box and send in the filibuster post card style filibusters. I want the Democrats holding the floor for days at a time speaking constantly to maintain the filibuster. I want Bernie collapsing at hour 97 and being hauled off on a stretcher. I want loss of bladder control on CSPAN. I want them too physically and mentally exhausted by March to even think about filibustering anything else. In the words of Donald Trump "Fight! Fight! Fight!"

Yes. As I said, a tiny, inconsequential ultra-radical left fringe championed these issues, but they were not taken seriously by even run-of-the-mill Democrats in these decades. Such ideas were dismissed outright by nearly every politician as political career suicide.

Even 90's Democrats voted by a significant majority to pass the Defense of Marriage Act (anti-"gay") and was signed into law by a Democratic president. (Most of those who voted against it didn't explicitly champion "gay marriage," they just said that DOMA was unnecessary as it was already illegal in every state to marry the same sex.)

I’d like to see a filibuster actually be required, too. No virtual “filibuster.”

Make them put their money where their muscles are .

Yup, he reminds me of John Murtha. People seemed to want to see a conservative democrat but he wasn’t. When his vote was needed by the left, he was reliable.

You’re probably correct. I will definitely never trust a person that won’t leave that bass-ackwards, evil and asinine party.
