Canada: ‘Aggressive Populist’ Pierre Poilievre Seeks Prime Ministership After Trudeau Exit
Breitbart ^ | 01/07/2025 | Frances Martel

Canadian Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre began a campaign on Monday to hold a general election in the country as soon as possible in the face of radical leftist Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing his resignation.

Poilievre is widely believed to be in the lead for the prime ministership as Trudeau’s Liberals, after a decade in power, have largely fallen from grace in the eyes of voters and Poilievre’s Conservatives are seeing major gains in the polls. Recent polls show that over half of Canadians want elections to remove Trudeau “as soon as possible,” and about 45 percent would vote Conservative. In a multiparty system like Canada’s, where the Liberals must compete with the radical leftist New Democrats (NDP) for the left-wing vote, those poll numbers would give the Conservatives a significant victory if they translate into votes and likely hand the prime ministership to Poilievre.

Trudeau announced on Monday that he would resign in response to growing rejection of his leadership from within the Liberal Party – not, apparently, in response to the rejection of the Canadian people.

Same. I’m surprised the headline didn’t label him “far right.”

‘Aggressive Populist’

I’ve never heard of these. Are they the ones with the big spiked hairdo and the leather dog collar with the long spikes?

He’s a pretty good guy. Trumpian vibes but comes across as highly polished.

Given that “Conservative” in Canada is a relative term, even if Pierre P. ends up being equivalent to Jeb Bush, its still an exponential improvement over Fidel Jr. in office there now.

Gosh, by golly, Breitbart observes "...a center-right conservative championing tax cuts to what left-wing critics have denounced as an 'aggressive populist' stance...."

Conservatives should give a fig about what "left-wing critics" have to say about anything. Period.

Trudeau said he would resign because of growing rejection of his leadership.

No, Trump told him to resign or he would fire him.

I’d like to see Poilievre meet with PDJT....the two of them have the two most drop dead gorgeous wives of any politicians anywhere.

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/biography-pierre-poilievre-new-book

This NP article has a lot of information about Poilievre. In it, reference is made to a anecdote in a book by Andrew Lawton that says something about Poilievre as a force to be reckoned with....

“One of the funniest parts of Lawton’s book involves former Alberta premier Jason Kenney’s account of how he came to meet Poilievre. In 1996, Kenney was preparing to run as the Reform Party’s nominee in Calgary Southeast and heard a “very mature, highly persuasive voice” among the dozen volunteers selling memberships by phone one evening.

“Hearing the voice, Kenney formed a picture in his mind of a lawyerly type in his forties or fifties, brimming with self-confidence and a natural sense of persuasion,” it reads. Kenney was also impressed by the volunteer’s effectiveness, because he was closing sales with 80 per cent of callers whereas the typical volunteer was closing 20 to 25 per cent.

“At the end of the night of calling, I was really keen on meeting this Mr. Poilievre,” he said. “And this wet-behind-the-ears, still-a-little-bit-scrawny seventeen-year-old introduces himself to me as Pierre Poilievre. I’ll never forget it. It hit me with the force of revelation that this guy was an absolute savant, a genius.”
