Ukraine halts pipeline carrying Russian natural gas to Europe, as deal expires

Gazprom reportedly confirmed the stoppage, saying Kyiv refused to extend a deal.

LONDON -- Ukraine stopped the flow of Russian natural gas through its territory to Europe at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, as a long-held deal expired, Kyiv officials said.

"We stopped the transit of Russian gas, this is a historic event," Herman Galushchenko, Ukraine's energy minister, said in a statement. "Russia is losing markets, it will suffer financial losses."

The move had been expected, as Galushchenko and other officials signaled they were preparing to stop the transnational pipelines and discussing the move with neighboring nations.

"We have undergone a series of stress tests of our gas system in order to be sure that after the transit is closed, we will be able to function stably, ensuring gas supply to consumers," Galushchenko said on Ukrainian TV last week, according to his office.

Natural gas exported by Russia through Ukraine has long been used by European countries, including Slovakia, which had pushed for Ukraine and Russia to reach a deal to continue the transit.

Russia's gas giant Gazprom confirmed the stoppage, telling state-affiliated TASS news agency that Kyiv had refused to extend the transit deal.

I predict renewing the contract will be part of negotiations....the Ukraine benefits because they charges the EU countries user fees. The EU is not happy and their economies are falling apart.

“Ukraine stopped the flow of Russian natural gas”

So how does the EU replace it with a different source?

How about the US? Past time we remove the adequate “green energy” nonsense that the US Government has pushed since the 1960s and start exploiting our own resources

From an AI generated google search I just did

As of the end of 2022, the United States had 691 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proven natural gas reserves, which was a 10% increase from the previous year. This was a new record for the second year in a row.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that the United States has enough dry natural gas to last about 86 years if production and consumption levels remain the same as in 2021. However, the actual number of years the reserves will last depends on several factors, including:
The actual amount of dry natural gas produced
Changes in natural gas technically recoverable resources (TRR) in future years
The U.S. has approximately 5 Tcf of natural gas storage capacity, which can deliver up to 1182 Bcf/d of natural gas supplies.
Here are some other natural gas statistics for the United States:
In 2022, the U.S. exported 6.9 Tcf of natural gas, which was the highest volume on record.
The U.S. is the world’s top producer and consumer of natural gas.
In 2020, the U.S. had 483,326 producing natural gas wells.
Natural gas accounts for 40% of utility-scale electricity generation.

And how much would US supplying Europe with natural gas cost?

In December 2023, the freight cost for LNG from the US Gulf Coast to Northwest Europe was $1.61 per MMBtu. This was the lowest level since the end of October.
Europe has been buying more than two-thirds of US LNG shipments since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The war caused supply chain issues and economic strain, which led to a scramble by European gas buyers to find alternative sources.

The problem with natural gas is, when you find it, you have to instantly pipe it, freeze it, or burn it off. You can see the two largest natural gas fields in the United States from space because they burn it off. It’s a byproduct of pumping shale oil. It won’t do much good to exploit more natural gas if we can’t do anything with it. Build more pipelines? Not unless you’re prepared to shoot the unbelievable number of protestors and/or fight endless court battles at incredible expense. Freeze it? You still have the problem of getting the frozen gas to someplace it can be used. Shipping frozen gas is highly regulated so sending it the most common and profitable routes is prohibited. I assure you any answer you read online has been thought of and doesn’t work. It’s all about the economics. If it could be done at a profit it would already be done. When you get the gas at the other end, you must process it back into a gas...a rather expensive thing to do.

The reason countries burned Russian gas is it was dirt cheap when compared to the alternatives. Then, the war. Everyone who was the recipient simply hoped and prayed that the war would stop, and the cheap gas would return. The alternative is ruining their economy to adapt to something more expensive. That’s the sort of thing that makes governments fall. So, they closed their eyes and prayed for the war to end quickly. Who cares who the winner is so long as prosperity is turned back on, and the populace doesn’t hang the leader from a flagpole.

The fact that the gas was shipped through Ukranian territory for so long during a war is simply astounding. Ukraine warned the receivers that the gas would go away as soon as the contract ended. Apparently, they still chose to hope for peace rather than risk what would happen to their economies when the gas stopped. Now, they’re screwed. But at least they have someone to blame. And it’s not the leader of the receiving nation. That, in the end, is the most important thing.

Now that Russia is no longer supplying gas, will that mean the pumping stations and pipelines become military targets? Because repairing above ground electrical wiring is one thing, replacing a pipeline is another, as in (months/years).

What idiots! Continue the unprovoked, totally unnecessary MIC proxy war to continue hitting the daily double of 50,000 additional dead Ukes per month and total EU depression as the Euroweenies double down on princely expensive energy deindustrialization.

“Now that Russia is no longer supplying gas, will that mean the pumping stations and pipelines become military targets?”

I’d guess no. Ukraine has its weapons fully spoken for and all they’d have to do is take a hammer to the stuff on their property. The Russians have better targets to shoot at and if they leave them there the stations may be useful in the future. As economic, as opposed to military targets, who would benefit?

There were farms, some still occupied, in the shifting no man’s land between Axis and Allied forces as the Allies fought up the boot of Italy. Nobody fired on purpose at the farms unless they were being occupied by the opposition. It was a waste of ammo.

“Are they extorting their way into NATO?”

Russia claims they stopped it.

Transit of Russian gas via Ukraine suspended at 07:00. “In the interests of national security, the transportation of Russian natural gas through the territory of Ukraine was suspended”, - the Ministry of Energy reported

No it’s not, I read it too and it’s exactly what happened. Europe bought Russian gas while sucking money from US to make war on Russia.

You’re the effen liar bert. You’re also yet another longtime who scuttled decades of creds to throw your lot in with these evil clowns.

Rattling old fool.

Cause and effect. Why did they stop it? If a trucking company refuses to renew a delivery contract for your manufactured goods to the consumer which forces you to shut down production who actually cut the supply line? You or the trucking company?
