Presidential historian Jon Meacham claimed Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that former President Jimmy Carter cared about politicians’ character while most voters do not.
Meacham said, “The way I think about President Carter is he’s a complicated man, driven by, like all people in the public arena, driven by different elements of ambition and service. When you look at most American presidents, most of our key leaders in the arena, you have this tension.” He continued, “You have someone who believed in the capacity of human nature to make our lives, the lives of the less fortunate better, stronger, even nobler, but you also have someone who recognized the limitations of human endeavor.”
Meacham added, “So what I think we are examining, what we’re going to experience this week is something that often happens in American life, which is great public commemorations, great public contemplations often tell us as much about ourselves as they do about the person being contemplated and commemorated. What you’re seeing, I think, with the passing of Jimmy Carter is a sad, but illuminating, sad, but illuminating instance of someone who, while imperfect believed in the centrality of character, the centrality of abiding creed at a moment in American politics where character is not at the forefront of most voters’ minds.

Sure if you consider being being rabid anti-Semitic a character trait.
Not exactly a Godly one though.
EXCLUSIVE: Jimmy Carter’s smiling, man-of-the-people image that saw him carry his own luggage was ‘all show’, say ex-Secret Service agents who claim ex-president was ‘rude and short’ and ‘talked down’ to soldiers
Carter tried to project an image of himself as a man of the people by carrying his own luggage when traveling. But that was another charade.
When he was a candidate in 1976, Carter would carry his own bags when the press was around but would ask the Secret Service to carry them the rest of the time.
As president, Carter — code-named Deacon — orchestrated more ruses involving his luggage.
When he was traveling, he would get on the helicopter and fly to Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base,’ says former Secret Service agent Baranowski.
‘He would roll up his sleeves and carry his bag over his shoulder, but it was empty.
‘He wanted people to think he was carrying his own bag.’
‘Carter made a big show about taking a hang-up carry-on out of the trunk of the limo when he’d go someplace, and there was nothing in it,’ says another agent who was on his detail.
‘It was empty. It was just all show.’
Oh, I would like to add, name one great secular leader in history who was not deeply flawed, I’ll wait.
Character? How do they define that?
Being soft spoken and not rude to the Iranians?
Wimp culture is as disgusting to me as Jesus said about the lukewarm. Look it up
Sounds fair. He was a better father than Biden.
“ president was ‘rude and short’ and ‘talked down’ to soldiers”
I’ll bet he was sweet to the ayatollah.
Wimp
No matter how much you hate these people, it’s not enough.
What codswallop.
I will support the idea that Carter was a man of some good character but lousy judgement on so many things. He was a national knee jerk to Nixon. Trump's post was accurate and gracious. Carter probably did the best he could with the hand he was dealt. 55 mph was a major drag that went on far too long.
All things have I seen in the days of my vanity; there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his evil-doing
Ecclesiastes 7:15
he cared about character except for his own, imho, or at least he was a sheitty judge of it
“ Sounds fair. He was a better father than Biden”
What does that matter?
I know women who pray for Trump’s conversion, I’m more religious than most of them. When I ask them why they get mad like any soft spoken BSing cult leader
There is absolutely nothing thing in our dogma, tradition, documents nor history that says the president has to be a good father
Character counts? Ya. It does. Like with any job. If the president is better and more polite to our enemies, as we’re all the presidents before and after Regan and also Trump, then that’s what I count as character. Regan was no prime example of husband or father
It didn’t count. His job was to maintain the country as a place we can be great parents if that’s our choice. And he did that
Jinnah was a good father? To whom? Who cares when his job was to make sure the hostages could be free to be good parents
It is all a lot of hooey
Carter was a good man who didn’t understand our constitutionally-protected freedoms nor the Declaration of Independence and its wariness towards central (federal) gov’t’s tendency towards tyranny nor the need to keep a tight grip on its constitutional limitations.
Personally great, politically terrible.
THE ‘buy gas only every other day’ KILLED travel industry.
And it’ll never be enough.
Like Billy’s bro claimed during a debate, that WunderKid Amy said that “nuclear proliferation” was America’s biggest problem
interesting that no matter WHAT Carter did or didn’t do the ONLY thing I remember is the dreaded “gas lines”, pushing the car that last 2 blocks because of his incompetence as a President.
“Personally great“
How, exactly
People take this character counts argument put out by a publicist in the eighties as dogma
Is all a lie.
No one cares
Clinton was beloved during his eight years and far beyond
He was a worse character than even imaginable in addition to foisting that witch of a wife on us for my ENTIRE adult life
No one cares
What matters is :
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
No more. No less. Cannot be done while having sex with a 24 year old intern while on duty in our Oval Office. Not his
Can’t be done while selling secrets. Running money via a bag man to enemies of the state. Allowing the Iranians to hold our state department staff (representatives of the executive office) hostage- for any length of time. Not while allowing our state department executive office representatives to be ambushed and killed in country with no assistance. No one needs to know anything about one’s personal life
People say Trump is bad for being mean. Who is he mean to? Why is he so popular they want to know. They don’t want to know
Logical people know that leaders have to be tough with our enemies and kind to the law abiding U.S. citizens
It was the opposite with Carter, Clinton the 2 Bushes. Obama
People know
Carter was inept. No clue why he was in the WH
The whole reason why he toppled the Shah was that he felt “personally insulted” by the Shah.
He was a small weak Petty person.
Well may the Lord bless his soul. Nothing against him. Just people getting this character thing all messed up
Besides, Trump has better character attributes than any one of them including Carter. He takes the oath for what it is. That’s the only character attribute any of them need to follow.
Is that why he carried his own empty bags?
