The risk of a dangerous fall is rising for Americans over 65. Distraction, lack of physical activity and ill-fitting shoes can all be part of the problem.

It’s an actual thing.
Pelosi’s Disease.
They’re accumulated the first one not so bad but they add up.
Very well weary about the next one. My shoulders took a beating and are not the same since.
Be careful, use hand rails!!!
My advice for the old guys is buy heavier rated step ladders because they are more stable, and buy some of the doodads that help stabilize extension ladders against roofs for chores on the roof.
Why do people keep getting set on fire in NYC?
“Pelosi’s Disease.”
She certainly won’t be wearing high heels anymore.
That’s where they are laying the blame for her fall even though people reported her as appearing weak and frail before she even fell:

I’m seventy and I’ve had a couple of bad falls, several minor ones and a lot of close calls.
Since 2019 I’ve broken my back twice, my pelvis, a couple ribs, from falling and I’ll be 77 in January. I feel your pain..
Perhaps I didn’t see it in the article, but a big percentage of older folks are very heavily medicated.
More likely falling is due to intoxication.
Yeah.. strong legs prevent a lot of falls. I don’t think Nan or Hillary do much leg work. And the elbow bending is a poor substitute.
If you don’t walk enough your coordination of muscle groups doesn’t work as well making you more vulnerable to falls(3 hip replacements).
I just read in the Daily M. that Jay Leno is sporting a big black eye. Hy he was being interviewed by Bill Maher, who says ‘people are saying’ Jay must owe money to ‘The Mob’, and they keep beating him up. Jay laughed it off.
Maybe not ‘The Mob’, but poor Jay has been having the worst kind of luck here lately. At least 3 damaging falls and one partial face burning over the last 12 months.
I hear he is taking care of his wife, who has Alzheimers.
That’s wonderful for Jay to do this, but, maybe that ongoing duty is wearing him out, so that his sleep is limited and his balance is compromised.
boomers getting older...
LOL!
Hillary fell down her stairs in a stupor after losing the election.
Banged her head and ended up with a subdural hematoma.
I wonder if Pelosi banged her head?
She hasn’t uttered a peep since she fell.
Yeah , I’m 82 and am well aware the next fall could put me in traction or a wheel chair for the few remaining years. Was up on the side of a barn today attaching metal and changing yard light bulbs but I gave up on ladders and scaffolding. Bought a Z45 Genie manlift that puts my old bones up where I need to be in basket. Expensive, but the kids cam always sell it when I’m gone. Live for the moment!
I always tell my husband that paying someone to do something up high is cheaper than an ER visit (or worse, hospitalization/institutionalization ;)
Take care and be safe.
A gentrifying population coupled with the flashy disorienting nature of our pathological consumer based society and entertainment specifically tailored to induce said consuming. People scramble their brains in front of the tube for hours on end, then get up in the dark to go to the bathroom and you have another statistical data point.
In Pelosi’s case it’s with Aunt Bessie’s Rheumatism “medicine” which she drinks from glass jars.
Copper Kettle (old folk song, several versions)
Build you a fire with hickory
Hickory, ash and oak
Don’t use no green or rotten wood
They’ll get you by the smoke
We’ll just lay there by the juniper
While the moon is bright
Watch them jugs a-filling
In the pale moonlight
My daddy he made whiskey
My granddaddy he did too
We ain’t paid no whiskey tax
Since 1792
We’ll just lay there by the juniper
While the moon is bright
Watch them jugs a-filling
In the pale moonlight
In the pale moonlight
I don’t believe that’s true.
There’s even a statistic for it. I didn’t know until just now.
Between 2011 and 2020, about 2.2% of emergency department (ED) visits for fall-related injuries among older adults were associated with alcohol:
Alcohol-associated fall ED visits 9,657 in US.
Number of total visits
618,099
Percentage of total fall-related ED visits
2.2%
Most common injury
Internal injury (31.8%)
Most common body part injured
Head (44.4%)
Alcohol can increase the risk of falls in older adults by impairing judgment, coordination, and reaction time. The risk of falls increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. For example, older adults who reported heavy drinking were 4.6 times more likely to suffer brain injury trauma than those who abstained from alcohol.
