A Texas couple was sentenced to more than a decade in prison each Friday after their pit bulls got loose and killed an 81-year-old man last year, the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office said.
Christian Moreno was sentenced to 18 years in prison and Abilene Schnieder was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the Feb. 24, 2023, mauling near their San Antonio home.
Ramon Najera, 81, was killed and his wife, Juanita Najera, was injured in the attack.

The dogs got loose and attacked the Najeras as they were running errands nearby, officials said.
“What happened to Mr. Najera was an unspeakable horror,” 226th District Court Judge Velia J. Meza said before imposing the sentence.
Firefighters who arrived on the scene saw a bloodied man being dragged around a corner by dogs, and the firefighters had to use pickaxes to fend off the animals, the city’s fire chief said at the time.
The three dogs involved in the attack or off their property at the time were euthanized, Animal Care Services said at the time of the attack.
The district attorney’s office said Moreno and Schnieder were criminally negligent by not providing adequate fencing and allowing the animals to roam free.
Juanita Najera told the court Friday that she has post-traumatic stress disorder, courtroom video broadcast by NBC affiliate WOAI of San Antonio shows.
“I would never have imagined I’d be calling myself a widow at this time in my life, and in this tragic way,” she said. "PTSD is now something I will have to deal with the rest of my life. Extreme loneliness and emptiness will also be a part of my life."

I’m in the San Antonio area and if I recall correctly their dogs were a problem and they knew it. The attack wasn’t the first time they escaped and threatened others. The owners were bad actors and got what they deserved.
Doesn’t matter. Criminally negligent. May they both rot in jail.

Pit Bulls don’t kill people
Pit bull owners kill people
Her husband was 81. What's she thinking?
This was a horrible act--I'm not diminishing this. It's just that the comment came off a little weird to me.
It is probably one of those things where we know what she meant but the words came out wrong.
“Sentenced to more than a decade in prison each Friday.”
“September 24, 2024”
Old article. Does not include recent events,
I have three dogs who are absolutely no danger to anyone. My Siberian Husky has got loose on more than one occasion. She is a runner. All times I get a phone call (her collar is tagged with my cell phone) from a person that say, “is this your dog.” When she gets tired of running, she just runs up to a person to pet her. If my dog were a Pit Bull, my error could have killed someone. There is no place for Pit Bulls. They are bred to kill. I have seen loving and gentle Pit Bulls, but said same have be known to attack and kill. It is in their blood by breeding.
You stupid ass
“The owners did not deliberately have them attack anyone.”
Texas is a one-bite rule state. This means the owner can be held strictly liable for any medical bills and damages caused by an animal either known to be dangerous or which could be dangerous. Obviously, one or both of the dogs were dangerous and the owner did not provide control over the animals and a death occurred. This could easily be considered criminal negligence and that determination may have been a factor in the sentencing. Need to see the court records.

Well said.
I was a meter reader and a mailman. You phrase that your dogs were not a danger to anyone is a lie. You stupid ass.
That’s correct.
The automobile drunk driver didn’t deliberately run over the pedestrian.
Does not matter. If you’re going to keep animals that can kill and eat people you’d better have them locked up 24/7 or you will be criminally liable.
We live in the woods, homes are at least an 1/8 mile apart. There is one neighbor that doesn’t keep his pit secured. Once it came in my woods and stopped about 20’ from me. Must have been the 5 prong pitchfork I waved in his direction, and my firm voice saying, “Go home!!” He left and as far as I can tell hasn’t come back.
I lend a hand to my nearest neighbors quite often. The pitchfork is usually in my hand when I walk over there. And there’s always something in the woods I want to cut, which is why I often have a machete along.
Or, pit bulls kill people, pit bull owners enable the attacker canines.
I've seen a pit in attack mode. Scary.
It’s not the breed.
It’s the type of people attracted to the breed.
