California Democrats have written to outgoing Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to ask for more than half a billion dollars in funding for an ailing high-speed rail project that President-elect Donald Trump defunded in 2019.
As Breitbart News reported, Trump withheld $1 billion in funding from the project after Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) canceled the original project. Newsom had explained to the state legislature that the original plan for a Los Angeles-to-San Francisco “bullet” train “would cost too much and, respectfully, would take too long.” Trump then demanded the state refund the money federal taxpayers had given it — applying the same rules that hold in the private sector.

They need that $$ to fund the high salaries of the do-nothing “executives” of this project - before DOGE rightfully pulls the plug on federal funds for this turkey.
17 years. Supposed to have been completed in 2020. Not a single train running. 1600 feet of track completed.
Just keep the right-of-ways open. There might come a time when it’s a good idea.
Indeed it’s a scam money maker for the state that will never end.
Well dang we need a few more billion to keep it running.
Funny, I think the Trump Administration is going to investigate the “train to nowhere” and put California politicians in jail for fraud and embezzlement. If Trump really wants to break the California political machine that is where all the bodies are buried. Every California politician has been “whetting their beak” in that fraud.
When Grover Cleveland was president, in his first term, he was able to create a surplus at the Treasury. But Cleveland was not re-elected and Benjamin Harrison came in and “inherited” the surplus. Harrison oversaw the first “billion dollar congress” which managed to spend a billion dollars in a single session. Cleveland was elected to his second term and found that the entire surplus had been depleted by Harrison.
And here we are all over again. Without, of course, any surplus. But Trump is coming in for his non-consecutive term, and Biden’s Associates are just trying to spend as much money as they can before Trump has a chance to touch it.
Who’s transporting and where are they going to?
Oh ya they’d use that money to build something the people could use.
They’re leaving in droves, U-Haul and moving companies couldn’t keep up a year ago.
Better put a light rail in Texas where all the Californians are going. The entire highway system in San Antonio is going double decker just to try to keep up
“ just trying to spend as much money as they can before Trump has a chance to touch it.”
just trying to pocket as much money as they can before Trump has a chance to touch it.
They’re not spending it on Californians
Or give it to your fat cat donors.
Better yet, do a federal audit on their election system. More corruption there than the Boondoggle Train.
Whatever happened to Freeper Boxcar Willie?
$500 Million? None of it will make it to any high-speed rail project. That’s “study money” that will disappear into pockets. A cash grab before the till closes.
The most useless and impractical project in America.
It would be better to like up all our tax money and burn it in a great big beautiful bon fire
A serious question (from a Willie Green fan):
I know nobody here likes HSR, and there are good arguments why it would be a bad fit in the USA.
But leave that aside. What I’m interested in is, having decided to do it, and having it funded, why didn’t it happen?
I grew up in NYC, where the tap water on the 88th floor is pure mountain spring water delivered through miles of acqueducts using gravity as energy. Every kid has to study the cross-section of Manhattan with all the electric, steam, waste, subway tunnels, rail tunnels, car tunnels, pneumatic tubes, etc that’s buried eight and nine levels down under the ground. Most of that stuff was designed and built 1880-1920.
It may or may not be important that California can only build 1600 feet of HSR in the time it took China to build 12,000 miles of it. And of course it’s not just China - most countries in the world, rich, poor, in between (except Africa) build these things easily and quickly.
But it’s probably important that our civil engineering/government collaborations CAN’T BUILD ANYTHING, and can’t fix what our great-grandfathers built with ease.
THat’s a much bigger issue than how to get from SF to LA.
$500M won’t even pay for the permit to build a bullet train parking lot.
The half billion dollars will probably buy them maybe 2 new rails being put down and extend the track by maybe 1 foot.
The American laundry machine is working overtime, even more of a reason to cut them off at the knees and leave them no crutches wheelchairs or prosthetics then throw thier a##es in jail like the j6 to sit and rot until we are good and ready to prosecute them
Wasn’t this thing supposed to cost $300 million?
the High Speed Train is just a get rich quick scam by the Pelosi Family. Not a mile of track will be laid and it will all make them richer to continue their hold on California well into the 2030s. But signs are there that even the once Golden State has had its fill of Newsom and crew—even with Kamala to “inspire” the black community.
Doing nothing ain’t cheap!
