A bill to avert a partial government shutdown that was backed by President-elect Trump failed to pass the House of Representatives on Thursday night. Congress is inching closer to the possibility of a partial shutdown, with the deadline coming at the end of Friday.
The bill needed two-thirds of the House chamber to pass, but failed to even net a majority. Two Democrats voted with the majority of Republicans to pass the bill, while 38 GOP lawmakers bucked Trump to oppose it. The margin fell to 174 to 235.
It comes after two days of chaos in Congress as lawmakers fought among themselves about a path forward on government spending – a fight joined by Trump and his allies Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. Meanwhile, the national debt has climbed to over $36 trillion, and the national deficit is over $1.8 trillion.

Too many members of Congress like the pork in these bills. It will be hard to change things.
“38 GOP lawmakers bucked Trump to oppose it.”
Close.
CONGRESS TANKS STREAMLINED RESCUE BILL
House killed a lean 116-page compromise 174-235, with 38 Republicans defying both their leadership and Trump’s endorsement.
The streamlined bill would’ve prevented a holiday shutdown, extended farm aid, and managed the debt ceiling through 2027.
Even Trump’s praise—calling it “a very good Deal for the American People”—couldn’t save it from GOP rebels determined to force a showdown.
Now D.C. faces a Friday shutdown with no backup plan and $36 trillion in debt hanging over their heads.
Oh, the humanity. Get the new Congress in place and start all over again.
I have mixed feelings. It would have established Trump’s power if he were able to kill the first bad bill and then immediately get the second better bill passed. He’s not even part of the government right now, but he is calling the shots. Unfortunately the bill he preferred didn’t make it. But, on the other hand, if the government were to shut down until Jan 20, I’d be fine with that.
New Congress is sworn in at noon on 3 January. If the game plan is to start Trump’s administration off three weeks later with a government shutdown that’s the way to do that; clearly the original Dem game plan was to start off with a porkzilla CR, so at least we avoided that. Interesting times.
By Friday, we will know if they have anything on Johnson or not.

ELON MUSK: “A super fair & simple bill was put to a vote and only 2 Democrats in Congress were in favor. Shame on
@RepJeffries for rejecting a fair & simple spending bill that is desperately needed by states suffering from hurricane damage.”
Well, they had their chance to keep the government open...and they FAILED.
Democrats shut the Government down with this vote. Send everyone home for 2 weeks and let the new Congress deal with this
Speaker Johnson said, “We will regroup and come up with another solution, so stay tuned.”

4D chess? Keep the gubmit shut down (or pass a CLEAN CR) until Jan 20th. Trump takes none of the blame. The country has 2 years to get over it.
He planned it this way. Smarter than your average bear.
Who?
That’s weird. 5 out of 6 AZ congressmen that I can name off the top of my head voted no. They’re MAGA ppl too, like Andy Biggs, Eli Crane & Paul Gosar. I wonder what the problem is with this new bill.
It does seem like the Democrats have to take the blame here. They did that to themselves. The media may try to spin it differently, but the numbers are right there: Democrats voted to shut down the government. Hopefully it will stay shut down until January.

Party discipline disappeared with earmarks. That was how members of congress were made to follow the party line.
Republicans are already attempting to prove they’re incapable of actually governing, and it will harm any conservative agenda we might want them to pass.
Shut it down. The deal will get better the longer the Dems have to wait and if they wait too long they get nothing.
