The Ukrainian capital has honored WWII Nazi collaborator and murderous militia commander Taras ‘Bulba’ Borovets
A street in Kiev has been renamed in honor of WWII Ukrainian militant Taras Borovets, as part of a nationalist push to glorify “outstanding figures of Ukraine” and erase Russian and Soviet history.
The Ukrainian government went on a de-Russification spree in 2015 following the US-backed coup in Kiev the year prior, and redoubled its efforts following the escalation of the conflict with Moscow in 2022.
Holocaust scholar Marta Gavryshko noted the name change of Monday morning, calling it a “symptom of a troubling phenomenon” of Vladimir Zelensky’s Ukraine making the “regional cult of nationalistic heroes who collaborated with Nazis in the Holocaust” national policy.
Taras ‘Bulba’ Borovets – nicknamed after the famous Cossack in Nikolay Gogol’s novel – was a Ukrainian nationalist in Volhynia, which was part of interwar Poland. In August 1941, following the Axis invasion of the USSR, he received permission from the Nazis to raise 1,000 men as the ‘Polissian Sich’ militia. This unit went on to aid the Germans in massacring the Jews of Zhitomir Region, most notably in the town of Olevsk.

Borovets did report to Nazi Germany... but he also refused a mission to exterminate Jews and in 1942, he accused Germany of war crimes, and his army positioned itself between the Nazis and the Soviets, refusing to be directly commanded by the Soviets.
“Parallel to the negotiations with the Soviets, Borovets continued to try to reach an agreement with the Germans. In November 1942, there was a meeting with Obersturmbannführer Dr. Puts, the head of the security service of Volhynia and Podolia general district. Putz said that the negotiations took place only because Borovets never gave orders to “spill German blood”. He demanded Borovets and his men join the fight against Soviet partisans. Subsequently, negotiations continued in writing. Borovets demanded the release of arrested Ukrainian nationalists and put forward political demands, but was refused. In March 1943, Borovets wrote that the struggle against the Soviets was vital. He set out the principles on which cooperation could be based:...

Russia cares about power and territory, not the symbolism of a street name in Ukraine. Criticism of a street name is just a way to legitimate Russia’s malign objectives.
I thought the “Ukriane Nazi” thing was a meme or exaggeration, until I looked into it. They have actual Nazis - I’m not making that up. Nazi MILITARY units.

Some folks here attempted to merely scoff off the NAZI story, but there really is a big problem.
Ukraine is were Germany raised entire SS divisions in the war, you had Stepan Bandera, monuments (multiple) erected to this creep littered accross the country, and even today the Ukrainian “government” sponsoring NAZI youth programs, there are NAZI funerals, NAZI salutes (not meant jokingly), NAZI flags, NAZI symbol patches for military units, major leaders of military formations that are publicly/vocal NAZI.
Of course there are those that will simply use the label “propaganda” and pretend that is an argument, but in Ukraine, the NAZI ideology is alive and thriving, and that's not cool.
While I do not consider it a major factor in how to view this conflict, it does once again as with Syria (ISIS/ISIL Islamist types we backed there), show the hypocrisy in what we do and how we judge things (entirely inconsistent with our stated values). In Ukraine we press both eyes and ears shut and say little about the NAZI issue since this wouldn't help us.
