GIVING IT ALL YOU'VE GOT
Ever hear the expression "Giving it the whole nine yards"? Do you happen to know where it comes from? I used to think it was a sports term. "Not so", say several experts. But there seem to be at least two schools of thought on the phrase's origin. Both seem plausible. I'll let you decide.
One explanation says that it's an expression from the construction trade. A full truck load, according to this rationale, will dump nine cubic yards of sand or gravel at your work site. In such a case, I suppose the expression would imply doing a job completely or thoroughly. A second explanation claims that the term came from World War II fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their planes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammunition belts measured exactly 27 feet. Thus, if a pilot fired all his ammo at a target, it got "the whole nine yards." In that context, the expression would mean using every resource at our disposal. Either way, giving something "the whole nine yards" effectively means "giving it all you've got" or "stretching to reach a goal." But what's the motivation? Why expend that much effort or resources? Sure, we can easily understand how that might apply to special projects or circumstances, but to a daily routine, as a way of life? What's the payoff? Well, according to Philip Reed, former chairman of the board for General Electric, it's satisfaction and a sense of making a difference. In his observation, those people who seem both to give and to get the most out of life have two things in common. First, they do whatever they're doing "all out", whether it's work or play, dull or boring, little or big. They aren't necessarily flashy or compulsive about it. They've just made a habit of being satisfied only with their best effort. The second thing he says such people have in common is "the rather special satisfaction, the deep-down joy" they get out of being able to help other people. Just to be able to do a little something extra for a friend, client, patient, or even a complete stranger. For these people, it's a most rewarding experience. If "giving it all you've got" or "giving it the whole nine yards" is based simply on greed, anger, a drive for control, or even a lack of self-esteem, it can burn us out and leave us dispirited or empty. How much better it is to go through our day giving thanks and looking for ways to make life better. The REAL secret of "giving it all you've got," it would appear, is doing it out of a sense of "delight"...a matter of attitude and maturity. This is something to which all of us might aspire, something that might enrich our lives in ways we never expected...and something to consider. CAPT J. David Atwater, CHC, USN |

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.

Ever hear the expression "Giving it the whole nine yards"? Do you happen to know where it comes from? This made me think of fabric. Joseph's coat. Nice motivational dream coat you've got there... how if we take it.
Well that wasn't the first thought. Joseph (as well as Joshua) lived to be 110, which is the cliche number for giving it all you've got.
110%
Which suggests the true meaning of tithing 10%, over and above worldly meanings.
Anyone striving for 100% perfection always falls short because "nobody's perfect."
To the 110%-ers, though... 100 is just a number in the rearview mirror, somewhere back in the dust.
Matthew 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
To infinity, and beyond!
Have a great evening..

Howdy, Kathy.
All the fog up there yesterday covered the trees with a tick layer of hoarfrost. Did you ever get some fog last night to cover your trees too? I hope so. Even with the drab gray skies, everything looked so pretty today.

Today's Insights
In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul describes the way in which faith in Jesus is received, nurtured, and passed on within families: “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice.” Though no one is saved by the faith of their parents, being part of a family of believers in Christ provides a biblical foundation. Exposing children to the truths of the Bible and the character of God picks up on the Jewish tradition found in the Shema (an important Old Testament prayer found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9): “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments . . . are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (vv. 4-7).
Today's Devotional
We were seated around the dinner table when my nine-year-old grandson said with a smile, “I’m just like Grandma. I love to read!” His words brought joy to my heart. I thought back to the year before when he’d been sick and stayed home from school. After he took a long nap, we sat together side by side reading. I was happy to be passing along the legacy of loving books that I’d received from my mother.
But that’s not the most important legacy I want to pass on to my grandchildren. I pray the legacy of faith I received from my parents and sought to pass on to my children will also help my grandchildren in their journey toward faith.
Timothy had the legacy of a godly mother and grandmother—and a spiritual mentor, the apostle Paul. The apostle wrote, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 Timothy 1:5).
We may think our lives haven’t been positive enough to be a good example for others. Maybe the legacy passed down to us wasn’t a good one. But it’s never too late to build a legacy of faith into our children, grandchildren, or any child’s life. Through God’s help, we plant seeds of faith. He’s the one who makes faith grow (1 Corinthians 3:6-9).
Reflect & Pray
What kind of spiritual inheritance did you receive? How can you build a legacy of faith?
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing me to You. Please help me to be a godly example to others.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.
May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.
May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

WW2. Fighter aircraft had 6 50 cal machine guns. 3 on each wing. The ammo belts were 27 feet long. 9 yards. Lined up correctly and from far enough away they could empty the guns on a single target. Give em the whole 9 yards. Thats where it came from.
