The Sooner State Republican decried how social media has hampered lawmakers’ ability to negotiate on legislation behind closed doors.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., complained on Thursday that social media has ruined Congress’s ability to make secretive deals on legislation before it is released to the public.
Mullin made the comments during a panel at a conference hosted by the No Labels party, which purportedly aims to “give power to the middle, in Washington and across America.” The event featured guests from across the political spectrum, including Republican Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Todd Young of Indiana and Democrat Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia.
While speaking before a room of attendees with several congressmen, Mullin discussed the complexities of the lawmaking process between the House and Senate and noted, “If you go back and … actually read The Federalist Papers, you’ll understand [the Founders] wanted Congress to be dysfunctional.”
“When people say, ‘Why don’t you all get along?’ It was never designed for us to get along,” Mullin said. “It was designed for it to be a thoughtful process and heavily debated so it couldn’t move as fast it moves sometimes.”
The Oklahoma senator went on to describe the consequences of Congress outsourcing much of its rulemaking to the executive branch and how doing so has the potential to create “destabilization throughout the economy, throughout the country, [and] throughout foreign policy.” He further opined that the federal government needs to “get back to actually allowing Congress to make the legislation” rather than allowing policy to be made predominantly through executive fiat.
Mullin’s remarks took a turn for the worse, however. The Sooner State Republican decried how social media has hampered lawmakers’ ability to negotiate on...

Uh huh.
“We have to pass it to see what’s in it.”
I don’t like him. Talks big the disses either Gets or Hegseth. Watch out for him. Lankford must be teaching him.
Such arrogance.
How about: “We have to fire you so we can see if anyone can do the job transparently”?
Ooohhh, I like that one.
Always remember: this is the same gutless puke who praised the racist DC cop who murdered Ashley Babbitt (he witnessed the shooting of the unarmed White woman).
For that alone he should have been stomped by his constituents in Oklahoma, instead they gave him a promotion and elected him to the Senate.
we remember
I swear, for a state as conservative as Oklahoma, it has two of the biggest squishes for Senators that I can think of. Both Lankford and Mullin are pathetic.
“has ruined Congress’s ability to make secretive deals on legislation”
How pathetic is this? Sounds like classic RINOism.
You are all on the take period.
Most of the time arrogant dolts are the ones with the least going for them. Mullen is no exception to this. If the state has any sense, which they usually don’t, he will be passed by for election.
Why he was elected in the first place is illustrative of the stupidity of the state’s electorate. His cowardly actions on Jan 6 alone are enough to end him. When you show up in Stilwell, Oklahoma for a casual gathering driving a new 500Sl Mercedes where most people drive pickups and breeze in like a king or tell an elderly fellow you pay more in taxes than he has ever made, it doesn’t say anything good to me.
“...secretive deals on legislation ...”
That’s called “pork!”
Politicians should have to wear body cams at all times.
Ones we can stream any time we want to.
He supports Hegseth, but if you read the article, he does explain that the reason Ernst didn’t want to support Hegseth is because she wanted the job, herself, and wanted Lindsey Graham to talk Trump into picking her, instead!
I personally wonder why transparency isn’t. A lack of transparency by government officials creates an air of deception by government. Government officials are supposed to work for the People. These same government officials tell Americans, they work for us after coming out from behind closed doors, Some deliberations are necessary to be done behind closed doors but not the majority of deliberations, by government officials, should be conducted behind closed doors as IS the current method of government. Show Americans transparency. Show Americans that government works for the People. IS common sense.
*sob!*
Not a Markwayne fan.
We’ve got one here in Kansas too, his name is Jerry Moran.
They don’t want us to see the sausage being made because of all the adulterants they add to it.
