BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) — Human-caused climate change made Atlantic hurricanes about 18 miles per hour (29 kilometers per hour) stronger in the last six years, a new scientific study found Wednesday.
For most of the storms — 40 of them — the extra oomph from warmer oceans made the storms jump an entire hurricane category, according to the study published in the journal, Environmental Research: Climate. A Category 5 storm causes more than 400 times the damage of a minimal Category 1 hurricane, more than 140 times the damage of a minimal Category 3 hurricane and more than five times the damage of a minimal Category 4 storm, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
This isn’t about more storms, but increasing power from the worst ones, authors said.
“We know that the intensity of these storms is causing a lot more catastrophic damage in general,” lead study author Daniel Gilford, a climate scientist at Climate Central, which does research on global warming. “Damages do scale (up) with the intensity.”
In 85% of the storms studied in the last six years, the authors saw a fingerprint of climate change in storm strength, Gilford said.
MIT hurricane expert and meteorology professor Kerry Emanuel, who pioneered potential intensity measurements, wasn’t part of the study but said it makes sense. It shows the increase in storm strength that he predicted would happen 37 years ago, he said.
Past studies have shown that climate change has made hurricanes intensify quicker, and slower moving, which causes even more rain to be dumped.

How far back do the records go?
Decades?
Centuries?
Millenia?
The headline alone is ridiculous.
Why did they pick 5 years? Because hurricane activity has been down for 15 or 20 years.
The scam continues.
The BS keeps stacking higher and higher...
Sure.
18.43 mph — come on people! This is science! Try to be precise!
My calculations say 16.5...
Waiting for; Climate change to blame for Trump’s 2024 election win.
More like “NEXRAD emissions” goosed hurricanes by 18mph.
We may or may not be in the midst of some kind of crazy climate crisis, but how would we know if we can't trust science to be honest with us.
Here’s the way it works:
Scientist #1: My research shows that there is no made-made climate change. It doesn’t exist.
Scientist #2: Better check again. Publish that, and your funding will dry up. Plus there’ll be angry protests outside of your office and at your home.
Scientist #1: My research shows that Mother Earth is being destroyed by made-made climate change! We must act, and act now!
Scientist #2: Now you’ve got it.
They have to stop at 2019 because the goose would disappear when earlier storms are factored in.
Probably 17.6 mph. FFS! How about the 280 million yr old stuff in Italy. Cycles assclowns, cycles. Sheesh!
“ Human-caused climate change made Atlantic hurricanes about 18 miles per hour (29 kilometers per hour) stronger in the last six years, a new scientific study found Wednesday.”
Article simply lies.
I looked at the study and the first thing the authors say about their study is the following:
“But other local and nonlocal factors beyond our scope may also have influenced attributable changes in hurricane intensities since pre-industrial. Changes in atmospheric circulation or hurricane wind shear…”
The study is a methods study, looking to see if their idea could possibly help to understand wind speed in storms.
To quote their conclusion: “This study has proposed and applied a novel framework to rapidly assess attributable changes in North Atlantic hurricane intensities due to attributable SST changes since the pre-industrial period.”
Pretty much every climate change article misrepresents published articles in this way, saying a study has proven something that the scientific report does not claim to have proven.
The scientists (grifter scientists) let this happen and are dishonest also.
Here’s the article.
Human-caused ocean warming has intensified recent hurricanes

Stopped reading (and vomited) right there.
Sheesh what a load of BS
Total BS
ONE single group of scientists with ONE study do not make a “scientific consensus”.
This is a variation of “attribution analysis” a statistical measure known to be invalid. And yes the century long trend of hurricanes is, no trend, down if anything. But COP 29 is going badly, a real bust apparently, so they have to juice up thePR battle with a little scare-porn.
