Colorado to pay $1.5 million for stifling web designer’s free speech

Colorado officials have agreed to pay over $1.5 million to cover attorney fees for graphic designer Lorie Smith, who successfully challenged the state’s antidiscrimination law at the Supreme Court.

The settlement, announced Tuesday, comes months after the high court ruled in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis that Colorado violated Smith’s First Amendment rights by attempting to compel her to create wedding websites for same-sex couples against her religious beliefs. Earlier this year, a federal district court issued a final judgment requiring state officials to cease efforts to compel Smith’s speech, a resolution that brought an end to years of legal and personal hardship.

“After enduring Colorado’s censorship for nearly seven years, I’m incredibly grateful for the work of my attorneys at Alliance Defending Freedom to bring my case to victory,” Smith said, referring to the religious liberty law firm that represented her. “As the Supreme Court said, I’m free to create art consistent with my beliefs without fear of Colorado punishing me anymore.”

Excellent. Will Colorado officials learn anything? Of course not. Will the Colorado taxpayers who will be footing the bill learn anything and vote out those who implement these policies? Of course not.

Pay the tab, Colorado. Then start saving funds for the next pay-out.

This election has taught us that it is okay to say “NO” to fringe ideology. Something tells me that we won’t be seeing many federal cases where the government still believes it can control your mind and sense of decency.

We are against people who are delusional. They will never learn and they aggressively pursue their goals and will never stop. They are using lawfare, riots, election cheating, intimidation, civil disobedience, vandalism. Their insane rants we may shake our heads at and laugh...but they seriously believe in what they say. We cannot afford to discount them as harmless kooks. They have also inserted themselves into public positions of power. Trump can’t get rid of the rot by himself.

When courts start stripping away qualified immunity for violations of the 1st and 2nd Amendments this crap will come to a screeching halt.

This election has taught us that it is okay to say “NO” to fringe ideology.

I believe it was a sound repudiation of those fringe, leftist ideologies. Just as Trump's 2016 election was largely a repudiation of the "gay marriage" Supreme Court ruling.

There are way more resisters than most people think.

2016 was a repudiation of Hillary Clinton.

Excellent???

Do think that money....

“Colorado officials have agreed to pay over $1.5 million...”

...is coming out of their pockets?

No, the taxpayers will be forking that over, one way or another.

If there was a violation of that artist’s civil rights, the people who did it ought to be in jail.

2016 was a repudiation of Hillary Clinton.

And Hillary Clinton was the embodiment of gay fascism.

Indeed. To me there is just something naturally abhorrent about some of the weirdos I see trying to play like they are a “woman” or these other fringe nutjobs. It’s like you can just ‘see’ the crazy in them. Actually ‘see’ it. :0)

This issue isn’t settled until a sweeping, comprehensive court decision finally finds for the First Amendment freedoms of speech and religion. This would likely invalidate ALL “Civil Rights Act” laws controlling “discrimination” by private individuals, businesses and associations. And that’s probably why courts are so wishy-washy about doing the necessary work.
