Democratic presidential candidates have won seven of the last eight general elections in New Mexico, but results from Tuesday’s election show that the state followed similar gains made by Trump nationwide.
Trump — who lost New Mexico by about 8 percentage points in 2016 and nearly 11 percentage points in 2020 — cut into that deficit, and did so in historically Democratic counties as well as Republican strongholds, according to unofficial results from The Associated Press.
“That is a breakthrough for the Republicans at the presidential level,” said New Mexico-based political columnist Joe Monahan as ballots were being tallied. “Where did those votes come from?"
Trump traveled to New Mexico on Oct. 31 to hold a rally in the campaign’s final days, taking a risky detour from the seven battleground states to court Latino voters. New Mexico has the highest percentage of Latino voters in the nation. Harris didn't visit the state after her nomination for president.
Isaiah Blas, 25, waited in line for hours last month to see Trump in Albuquerque. He pointed to the sea of people in red “Make America Great Again” hats around him, saying it was a sign that the trajectory of politics could change in the state.
“I think a lot of New Mexicans are getting tired of these Democrats saying that they’re going to do it and they don’t do anything for New Mexicans," Blas said, pointing to the state's persistent and dismal rankings nationwide for crime rates and educational outcomes. "We’re just sick of it because we have Democrat after Democrat after Democrat. Are we getting better? No.”
The shift toward voting for Trump played out in Democratic-dominated cities along the Rio Grande corridor including Doña Ana, Santa Fe and Bernalillo counties.

Like most states, there are a couple of blue dots with red counties surrounding them.
New Mexico has some very unique demographics, including some large Indian reservations, and Spanish families that have been there for 400 years. Politics in that state is challenging. It was pretty Republican when I lived there, but that was almost 20 years ago.
I read the article but didn’t see the vote margin in 2024. I thought that was going to be what the article was about.
Did I miss it?
Hmmm... I wonder why? New Mexico does not require voters to present identification while voting. That can’t be it.

I wasn’t required to present ID here in New Mexico when I voted. I wished it was required.
Unfortunately, with the multi-generational crooked Bernalillo County elections, from by far the most populous county in the state, and the recently horribly gerrymandered political districts in the state, it doesn’t matter how “republican” the state’s residents may ever be.... (And on top of that there is massive voting of illegal aliens permitted).
Carpetbagger Bill Richardson ruined the state as Governor 20 years ago. Prior to him, even the democrats of NM were fairly conservative in their own values. He tried hard to turn New Mexico back into Old Mexico, and mostly succeeded.
May he rot in hell.
You pretty much nailed NM politics. I might add that it’s a welfare state in the sense that everything here in this wasteland exists at the pleasure of the feds, labs, military installations, highways, SNAP, and indian lands. Santa Fe is run by man-hating lesbians and their emasculated minions.
Greetings from Colorado, I have really enjoyed my visits there. Santuario de Chimayo, amazing wood-work and I could ‘feel’ the place. I’ve got my dirt from the “room” right here.
The church with the painting that changes, I saw it as a child. I can see why artists go there, the light is magic and so are the pastel colors.
It’s sad that New Mexico remains blue. I love to visit that state. It boasts the best Mexican restaurant in the world, La Placita in Albuquerque.
A no-voter-ID state. What else would you expect?
The Democrats have held on to New Mexico......for now. The margin was eaten into massively and if Hispanic voters in the state realign on the same scale as Hispanic voters in Texas and Arizona the whole state will flip back to red (let alone if Hispanic voters in those two neighboring states continue drifting even further right).
One factor that might have held back the rising populist tide in New Mexico is that Hispanic voters in the state tend to be a little older than is the case in either Texas or Arizona and it is particularly the young who are rejecting the Democrats. Another factor that may accelerate New Mexico’s shift back to red is frakking. New Mexico’s budget has been in surplus and its economy growing almost entirely due to frakking. It could grow a lot faster, generate more good paying jobs and a lot more tax money for the state if Leftist Gaia worshiping Democrats were not in charge. They’ve been placing all kinds of restrictions on Frakking as a sacrifice to Gaia. New Mexico is not a particularly wealthy state. They could really do with more money and more good jobs. A lot of people are likely to want to remove the state government that has been hindering both.
Its all about Albuquerque. Almost half the state's population lives in that one metro area. One thing people may not realize about this election is that Trump won American Indians by a factor of 2 to 1. Its all about getting more of the Hispanic voters in New Mexico to realign away from the Democrat party like many have done in Texas, Arizona, Nevada, etc. Texas and Arizona have been shored up and are now very solidly red. New Mexico and Nevada are teetering on the edge of flipping back to being red states. If the Hispanic realignment goes any further, they're both likely to flip in the next election.
Because of this, watch the left suddenly raise the cry and hew for stronger borders.
