SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A racist term for a Native American woman will be removed from nearly three dozen geographic features and place names on California lands, the state Natural Resources Agency announced Friday.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2022 signed a bill into law that bans use of the word “squaw” in future place names and ordered the agency rename all places that used the slur, including on streets, bridges, public buildings and cemeteries, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.
New names have been selected in consultation with California’s Native American tribes for over 30 locations in 15 counties.

Squaw bury shortcake. ( only punchlines)
Replace Squaw with ‘Warren.’ Problem solved.
Does this mean Sandy AOC will have to change the name of her Girl Scout cookie sales platoon from “The Squawd” to a non-racial slur?
Warren Valley.
Aren’t biologists the only people qualified to know what a Native American woman is?
Did California every ban Janet Lynch from visiting? From using the word, "California," without approval by the California State Legislature or approval by the California Attorney General?
I am SO tired of this. My Choctaw grandmother called it “squaw bread” her entire life without a touch of bitterness, irony, or hatred. Now what? its called “fry bread” right next to a sign that says “N-D-N Tacos, for sale here!”
I guess a change to “Injun Woman” doesn’t stand a chance.
And what about the lady whose family owned slaves . . . was she, Kamala Harris, banned from runing for President of the United States - banned by California or banned by California's "distinguished" governor, attorney general, and state legislature (not to mention, its "educators")?
Obviously not.
“...racist term for a Native American woman”
SAYS WHO?
In my area the state renamed Squaw Lake to Nature Lake, however the townsfolk voted to keep the town name of Squaw Lake and the state has no say in the matter.
“runing” - > running
Squaw is a version of the “C” word. I used the term for my great grandmother, til I married my Indian husband, who informed me of its real meaning. I was aghast!
Language...squawk 7500
So many important things to do and they pick this but this is a distraction from their incompetence
or “Noise that never stops”...:p
I don’t worry about it, and for a simple reason. What something has been called for decades will continue to be called that by the people, no matter what street signage or names on paper may say.
More recent case in point: Clingman’s Dome. It will continue to be called that by people in the area long after those who want to rename it are dead and gone. At which point the name will be rightfully changed back.
This, too, shall pass. They can wave their hands and change signage all day long but as long as they can’t mandate it for the people, they lose.
Squaw (?), n. [Massachusetts Indian squa, eshqua; Narragansett squâws; Delaware ochqueu, and khqueu; used also in compound words (as the names of animals) in the sense of female.] A female; a woman; -- in the language of Indian tribes of the Algonquin family, correlative of sannup.
