Residents of Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood are venting their frustrations after an Aldi store abruptly closed its doors, leaving many wondering where to access fresh food.
According to the company, the store closed last month, with officials saying that all employees were offered transfers to nearby stores.
While the company says no jobs were lost, the neighborhood’s loss of easy access to fresh food is a painful reality for residents to navigate.
“All the stores in our community are closing,” one shopper told NBC Chicago. “It’s just sad that a lot of people don’t have transportation.”
The neighborhood also is reeling from the loss of a Walgreens location, with lights still left on inside.
Ald. Ronnie Mosley, who represents the city’s 21st ward, says the move feels like a slap in the race.
“They didn’t understand the ramifications of this,” she said. “They didn’t understand they were the only grocer in all of West Pullman.”

Chicago wants to open a city-run grocery store. It could be the solution to urban food deserts.
Haven't heard too much about that project since.
A chiraq run gubmint grocery store??? What could go wrong.
“They didn’t understand the ramifications of this,” she said. “They didn’t understand they were the only grocer in all of West Pullman.”
Any chance the store is located in a neighborhood where a certain demographic prefers their groceries free?
I’ll give 10:1 odds that the locals were robbing the store blind.
“A chiraq run gubmint grocery store???”
What would that entail? All the groceries you can steal, but only in one grocery cart?
All you can eat scamp, handfuls leaving in purses. Too many five-finger discounts of meat and hair-care products.
Their gangs running through stores grabbing as much as they can carry ... yeah, white extremists ruined Red Lobster, Aldis and Walgreens for everybody.
Well two things: where did they go to steal their food before Aldi AND why did it close? There is only one reason and that is: the store wasn’t making any money. Why not enough money? either not enough customers or it was being robbed out of business.
White libtards: "Capitalist greed did this!"
Might be a good idea to ask yourself if the problem might be you.
Aldi’s closes with no reason given in the article....
DUH!

You gotta wonder what the shoplifting rate was.
The residents “didn’t understand the ramifications” of unsustainable loss rates.
“prefers their groceries free”
Nah, they are just getting their reparations early.
you know it's bad when things escalate from a slap in the face to a slap in the race.
guess not a food desert anymore...115th and halsted closes; 107th and halted opened (5 days before aldi’s closed)
“Ald. Ronnie Mosley, who represents the city’s 21st ward, says the move feels like a slap in the race.”
No, they were just slow learners and finally figured out WHY they were the only grocery store in the area.
I wonder why?
It's a mystery.
We may never know.
