Dockworkers' union walks away from negotiations with East and Gulf Coast employers

East and Gulf Coast dockworkers could resume their strike on Jan. 15 if a deal isn't reached..

The union representing dockworkers at East and Gulf Coast ports walked away from the negotiating table with port employers this week over concerns about automation as the two sides face a mid-January deadline to finalize a deal and prevent the resumption of a strike..

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents port employers, were on their second day of talks this week when the ILA union left negotiations

...

the ILA union is refusing to agree to the addition of any new technology at East and Gulf Coast ports even though USMX has said that no jobs would be eliminated as a result of automation. Port employers don't expect the union to return to the negotiating table.

The ILA confirmed in a statement that it broke off negotiations with USMX and placed the blame on port employers for "pushing automation and semi-automation

...

the average full-time ILA dockworker in New York/New Jersey under the previous contract made $350,000 per year, while in Norfolk, Virginia, they made an average of $200,000. ILA members in Savannah, Georgia, averaged $180,000 while their peers in Houston, Texas, and Charleston, South Carolina, made an average of $170,000.

...

ILA President Harold Daggett signaled in a September interview that the union was willing to persist in its strike to get its demands even if it meant inflicting broader damage on the U.S. economy.

"I'll cripple you," Daggett said in the interview about the effects of a strike. "I will cripple you and you have no idea what that means. Nobody does."

It’s time for the rank and file,ACTUAL working stiffs, to walk away from their national, self-serving “leadership”.

In other words - Union Bosses put ice on the strike to try to protect Kamala’s candidacy... now that she has proven a loser- strike is back on.

And while their stated cause is concerns about “automation” - that can’t be their primary concern. I suspect it is just another money grab. And lest we forget how their union dues work: they get a % of any pay increase... so they have a conflict of interest.

Yet two more unions reminding us how they are little more than organized crime syndicates engaged in racketeering.

Trump needs to, if he can, declare the transport of commercial goods to be a national security issue, the same as Reagan did with the air traffic controllers.

Can he, in some way?

Truman had to deal with this kind of insurrection, at least twice, and did.

Predictable as the sunrise. We knew they only put it off to keep Democrats from taking the hit for the economic problems they are gonna cause by walking off.

I am thinking this may turn out to be their PATCO moment.

Time for some military trainees to learn how to work the docks until the ports get automated.

It is. Automation means fewer workers needed, so fewer dues collected.
