SALT LAKE CITY — As Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are traveling to swing states across the country to make their final pitch to voters, the race in Utah is all but decided.
A new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll conducted by HarrisX shows Trump is polling 30 percentage points ahead of Harris among Utah voters, with just over a week to go before Election Day.
The poll shows Trump with 61% support among Utah voters, compared to 30% for Harris. Another 2% say they'll vote for independent candidate Cornel West, while Green Party candidate Jill Stein garners 1% support, and 6% of voters say they're unsure.
When including which way undecided voters are leaning, Trump's support among Utah voters increases to 63%, Harris' to 31%, West to 4%, and Stein to 2%.
Jason Perry, director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, said Trump is seeing more success this year in Utah than in past presidential elections.
"Donald Trump currently holds a strong position in Utah's presidential race, polling at 61%," he said. "Over recent election cycles, his support among Utah voters has grown, with his share increasing from 46% in 2016 to 58% in 2020. As the election approaches, he appears to once again be in a strong position in the Beehive State."
The poll was conducted by HarrisX Interactive Oct. 15-19, among 813 registered Utah voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points.

The push by Harris and her allies to make Partial Birth Abortion legal on demand in all 50 States is not a big selling pitch to Mormons.
It might cost her the Election, depending on the level of margin in Wisconsin & Pennsylvania + overall national margin, with the Amish as they are starting to vote in massive numbers & the Democrats don’t stand a chance at getting over 5% of the practicing Amish as long as they continue to support Abortion. The Mormons are more open to bloodshed, i.e., capital punishment, abortion, and wars, than the Amish. With the Amish their position is pretty uncompromising/flexible.
There aren’t enough Mormons in New Mexico to make a material difference in the Presidential race. But in Arizona/Nevada its about 4% of the voting population that are active Mormons and a shift of 3% in Utah’s overall population where active Mormons make up about 48% of the population ought to shift it about 0.25% from Biden/Harris -> Trump. So, if it’s 49.4% Harris 49.0% Trump (without this shift) then it would be 49.25% Trump 49.15% Harris (with this shift).
I don’t know much about Mormon religion or culture but aren’t they doctrinally very pro-America? Something about Native Americans being descended from the Israelites and America divinely founded specifically to allow their religious freedom. If I’m right they should shun people who suppress freedoms and disparage religion in general.
Well, Mitt Romney has a big influence, or has had in the past. I think the extreme lack of morals in society today, attributable to Harris/Biden has given pause to even the most devoted Romney supporters.
IMO the Mormon vote hasn’t shifted. What you are seeing is a National Shift. Go back and look at the 2020 results & compare the present & I think you’ll see around 3% shift.
Personally, I have never really believed that it’s credible that enough vote totals in enough States were shifted by fraud in the 2020 Election to make a material difference. However, the truth on this has never been proven either way because our systems are so sloppily managed.
Will that 3% shift materialize in the results this year? I think quite likely because (a) it looks real, (b) though the systems are still sloppily managed they are under much more scrutiny in the Swing States & those desiring to cheat ought to be feeling very scared & this deterrent should hopefully prevent them from doing anything stupid. However, where I see them focusing is more on the House/Senate races. In Texas I think the sloppy conditions still exist & I could see potential for some cheating happen on behalf of Allred in the Senate race + some close House races & then they’d try the Jamie Raskin games to try to undermine the Election results.
If a shift of 3% does happen from Biden/Harris -> Trump then this means that anything under 6% margin in 2020 should comfortably flip all 6 Swing States that Biden won in 2020.
In the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, six states had margins of victory for Joe Biden over Donald Trump that were less than 7%. These states were:
Georgia: Biden won by 0.2%.
Arizona: Biden won by 0.3%.
Wisconsin: Biden won by 0.6%.
Pennsylvania: Biden won by 1.2%.
Nevada: Biden won by 2.4%.
Michigan: Biden won by 2.8%.
Yeah he’s a strange guy. I get he’s rich and probably buys a lot of influence and favors over the years. But it’s odd to me that someone can be the Governor of MA and then the Senator for UT. I get the politics of it. But the carpetbagging from high office to high office just doesn’t seem very American. And sure there have been carpetbaggers before - but from Gov of one state to Senator of another? Just odd. To me.
The mass mailing of ballots “due to Covid” makes 2020 an anomaly. The most votes ever were cast. Trump got the most votes ever in history, except for Biden. Trump got 6 million more votes than Obama in 2008 and 10 million more than Hillary in 2016. It’s incomparable. Cheating questions aside, it was unprecedented. We’ll see how things shake out for 2024.
"votes" are shifted to where they are needed*.
That's what crushed the Red Wave in 2022.
*"votes" cost money.
Man bites dog is a story.
It is no surprise that LDS Utah is on President Trump's team. I would be totally shocked otherwise.
* I know Obama campaign had a lot of questionable credit card donations
Missouri, 2008-2012 0bama 2008 McStain 2008 total 2008 1,442,180 1,445,812 2,924,218 difference of 3,632 "votes" 0bama 2012 Dumbney 2012 total 2012 1,223,796 1,482,440 2,757,323 difference of 218,384 votes [note: Missouri couldn't be voted "straight ticket" during those years]
Now, just where in the heck did those 220,000 Missouri Democrat "voters" disappear to?
Something similar went on in Florida in 2018-2022, to the tune of 900,000 disappearing Democrat "voters".
My bad.
0bama lost in 2008 by 3,632 “votes”.
In 2012, the difference between the 2008 “votes” for 0bama and the 2012 votes for 0bama was 218,384.
Well, it shows that not ALL Utahans believe the words that come out of a single persons mouth.

"He (Joseph Smith) is the man through whom God has spoken... yet I would not like to call him a savior, though in a certain capacity he was a god to us, and is to the nations of the earth, and will continue to be." -- Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 8:321 "You call us fools; but the day will be, gentlemen and ladies, whether you belong to this Church or not, when you will prize brother Joseph Smith as the Prophet of the Living God, and look upon him as a god..." -- Herber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses 5:88 "If we get our salvation, we shall have to pass by him [Joseph Smith]; if we enter our glory, it will be through the authority he has received. We cannot get around him [Joseph Smith]" - (as quoted in 1988 Melchizedek Priesthood Study Guide, p. 142) There is "no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth...no man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God" -- Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p.190 "I tell you, Joseph holds the keys, and none of us can get into the celestial kingdom without passing by him. We have not got rid of him, but he stands there as the sentinel, holding the keys of the kingdom of God; and there are many of them beside him. I tell you, if we get past those who have mingled with us, and know us best, and have a right to know us best, probably we can pass all other sentinels as far as it is necessary, or as far as we may desire. But I tell you, the pinch will be with those that have mingled with us, stood next to us, weighed our spirits, tried us, and proven us: there will be a pinch, in my view, to get past them. The others, perhaps, will say, If brother Joseph is satisfied with you, you may pass. If it is all right with him, it is all right with me. Then if Joseph shall say to a man, or if brother Brigham say to a man, I forgive you your sins, "Whosoever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them;" if you who have suffered and felt the weight of transgression—if you have generosity enough to forgive the sinner, I will forgive him: you cannot have more generosity than I have. I have given you power to forgive sins, and when the Lord gives a gift, he does not take it back again." -- Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p.154-155 "It is because the Lord called Joseph Smith that salvation is again available to mortal men.... If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation," -- Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 396, 670 "No man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith. From the day that the Priesthood was taken from the earth to the winding-up scene of all things, every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are—I with you and you with me. I cannot go there without his consent. He holds the keys of that kingdom for the last dispensation—the keys to rule in the spirit-world; and he rules there triumphantly, for he gained full power and a glorious victory over the power of Satan while he was yet in the flesh, and was a martyr to his religion." Brigham Young, October 9, 1859
Brigham Young, --JOURNAL OF DISCOURSES, vol. 8 p. 224 God is my “right hand man.”[8] (Joseph Smith, in a letter to James Arlington Bennett on November 13, 1843, History of the Church, (Deseret Book, 1975), vol. 6, p. 78.) "God made Aaron to be the mouth piece for the children of Israel, and He will make me be god to you in His stead, and the Elders to be mouth for me; and if you don’t like it, you must lump it." Joseph Smith at the LDS Conference on April 8, 1844, History of the Church, vol. 6, pp. 319-320. "God is in the still small voice. In all these affidavits, indictments, it is all of the devil—all corruption. Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on the top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter- day Saints never ran away from me yet." Joseph Smith, Sunday, May 26, 1844 History of the Church, vol. 6, pp. 408-9. "We will become gods and have jurisdiction over worlds, and these worlds will be peopled by our own offspring. We will have an endless eternity for this.” — Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.2, p.48 “As man is, God once was; as God is, man may become.” Lorenzo Snow, Mormon Prophet and president "The day will come—and it is not far distant, either—when the name of the Prophet Joseph Smith will be coupled with the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the Son of God, as his representative, as his agent whom he chose, ordained and set apart to lay anew the foundations of the Church of God in the world, which is indeed the Church of Jesus Christ, possessing all the powers of the gospel, all the rites and privileges, the authority of the Holy Priesthood, and every principle necessary to fit and qualify both the living and the dead to inherit eternal life, and to attain to exaltation in the kingdom of God."[5] Joseph F. Smith, sixth president of the LDS Church, Gospel Doctrine, 5th ed. [1939], p. 134; as quoted in “Joseph Smith: Restorer of Truth,” Ensign, (Dec. 2003): p. 17. “Thus those who gain eternal life receive exaltation. . . They are gods.” (LDS Apostle Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, pg. 237). “We stand in reverence before him [Joseph Smith]. He is the great prophet of this dispensation. He stands at the head of this great and mighty work which is spreading across the earth. He is our prophet, our revelator, our seer, our friend. Let us not forget him. Let not his memory be forgotten in the celebration of Christmas. God be thanked for the Prophet Joseph” (Gordon B. Hinckley, the fifteenth president of the LDS Church, Ensign article entitled “Joseph Smith: Restorer of Truth,” December 2003) My brothers and sisters, in this bicentennial year of his birth, I should like to speak of our beloved Prophet Joseph Smith. . . . In the 135th section of the Doctrine and Covenants we read the words of John Taylor concerning the Prophet Joseph: “Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it.” [D&C 135: 3] (Thomas S. Monson, counselor to President Gordon B. Hinckley, the semi-annual LDS Conference in Salt Lake City, 2005) |
In places like Mesa, Arizona the Mormon business model for small blue collar business owners has been exploitation of cheap illegal alien labor.
As a result, Az Mormons were strong open border proponents and they were strongly opposed to Trumps border polices.
They are shifting because massive illegal immigration under Biden is destroying communities Mormons live in. The schools in Mormon dominated communities were absolutely top tier until about 10-15 years ago when DEI polices and illegal immigration began to erode the system.
It's also destroying the Mormon business model because Mormon owned small businesses are getting hit hard by competition from illegal aliens who can undercut them by starting their own companies in the underground economy created by our two tier above ground and underground economies
My son married a Mormon girl. I am now blessed with dozens of Mormon in-laws.
They, almost to a person, dislike Trump.
They also can’t stand Kamala.
I would guess that most of them aren’t going to vote. They don’t want to be seen as supporting some so sinful (their words).
I voted for Trump because he did a decent job before and I think he will do so again. Not a fan of his personality, but this is not a Class President election. I’m not voting for the popular kid.
